I could bolt a 289 straight in but with drums all round and no power steer that might be a bit much. :D

In order I'd like :

Front discs
Power steering

I don't think I'll ever swap the engine out though, value in keeping it matching. If the right XD/XE came along I'd probably upgrade it.

This is how I know I'm old, an XD is now considered a sought after vintage car...

Surely they've worked out a way to stop the door handles breaking?

The Golf Mk4 saga continues

Looks like after my youngest daughter decided to veer into the curb to miss a kangaroo sitting in the middle of our street 4 months ago which destroyed the LH inner tie rod and and mis-aligned the lower control arm, the steering rack has decided to finally crap itself.

I fixed the tie-rod and lower control arm issues myself and the car has been driving well since repaired, but last week the power steering fluid was low and required about 250mls to top up. Didn’t notice any obviously leak suspects, pump and hoses all looked OK, and the LH steering rack boot wasn’t leaking. Checked the fluid level for the next few days and it seemed stable.

Today my daughter calls me to say that the steering was making a horrible noise, so luckily she was nearby so met her there to top up the reservoir to get the car home.

Put it up on racks, and fluid is leaking out of the RH steering rack boot.

Whether this was a delayed result of the impact 4 months ago, who knows.

Anyway, need to decide whether I spend more on the car to keep it alive. It’s a 2003 model, but mechanically is great and drives well.

So, does anyone have direct experience of steering rack rebuilders or reconditioned rack sellers locally? I could go the wreckers route, but I don’t particularly feel like going to all the effort to replace the steering rack only to do it again because the replacement is a dud.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry Dedja, no experience at all with anything under the bonnet/fender in that space.

My daughter has bought a nearly new Hyundai Kona and in the meantime tried to sell her SP23 300k Mazda 3 which mechanically is a ripper! It's been dinged a few times but overall it goes great. She has now (as of last night) managed to sell that as well. I'll miss the little SP23 Mazda 3 though, what a cracking car!

I’ve owned a Mazda 3 SP23 sedan, liked it for a while but preferred a hatch, and the Mazda 3 hatches were fugly. Have had a Golf Mk7 GTI ever since, nothing will prize that from my hands.

Unfortunately, I'm selling my 64 Chev.

In short, it's an Aus built Fisher Body 283 on the tree. Bench seats. Rust in body but nothing serious, good floors and boot. Mechanically good.

It starts, stops and steers. Few leaks but nothing dramatic. In the 12 or so years I've owned it, I've got 6 drops of fluid on the driveway. Front end done and Carby reconditioned about 1000km ago.

It's on club rego. Easy to transfer to full rego. Easy to update or keep as is like I did and cruise around in.

I need to free up space, cash and time as I need to get another car, now that my lad is nearing his P's.

Clever spotting there Bandit!

It is a bit tricky taking photos in that small space and I couldn't move the car out of the carport at the time.

But I'd love to keep the car if possible, but like I have said, I can't keep everything and my son is taking my car from me when he gets his P's.

I have taken some more photos and put them on Gumtree as well.

Had a few lowballers, pretty easy to ignore them. I don't get offended easily, so it's water off a ducks back.
