Hogg Premier League Preview 2025
Two very strong teams have joined the Premier League this year so this will be a very tough to survive let alone thrive. Haven’t written one of these for a while so it’s time for REB’s patented ‘kiss of death’….the HPL preview 2025. I’ve done all of you a big favour and made sure I haven’t selected a premiership winner in this preview.

The favourites (1-5)

As always, I expect the Roosters to be there when the guns are firing late in August. A bit of a mixed finals record but the Chooks are always crowing in the minor round and it’s hard to see them missing out late in the season. I’m always a big rap for TEAM_FISH and how he didn’t win more matches last season with that scoring I’ll never know. A repeat of the last year’s scoring should bring him more wins. Wild HORNE Berry had a slight slip up last year but I’m expecting a return to form from the Juice this year with a possible return to Grand Final action. The other side I think will do well is Mediocre at Best who had an uncharacteristically poor season last year.

The contenders (4-9)

It was a break out year for Poon Army as the reigning premier ended his drought but history shows a dip after premiership success. Should still make the finals but might be behind a few others this season. Head Butters were awesome in Division I last season but will find Premier a harder head to butter. I still think they make finals though. Speaking of break out seasons, it’s time DAISYSDUDS did something at this level. Trailing by some distance last year the Duds really rallied late and this season I reckon he might finally make the eight. The other side I see making the finals are The Willies who missed by a whisker at their first attempt last year.

The pack (8- 14)

Hondo 97s-98s are a high scoring team but for some reason they don’t win matches. Even when Hondo scored well last season he still got nowhere so it’s hard to see where the improvement might come from. He’s got a lot to replicate from last year to overcome that luck factor. Captain Who is a regular finalist but might be mentally scarred after becoming Poon Army’s bitch last season. At least Groover will only have to face the Poon once before August, but this August he might be spectating. Ecky’s Fevolas are another good side who will challenge the top eight and it shows how strong this league if I’m tipping Ecky will be mid table. Pool Swimmers should be around the mark too after their perfectly timed run to the Granny in Div I last season with a 6-10 finish likely. Two teams I believe might rise a bit from poor seasons last year are Summer of George and Inner Sanctum. With relegation in the air this season I expect both of these veteran Premier League outfights to lift and challenge for the eight.

The slack (13-18)

Jobby the GOAT fired up in 2024 and managed to stumble into the eight but I’m predicting that the GOAT might be kidding himself this year and find himself at the wrong end of the table. Speaking of finalists who are due for a banana skin, I reckon the Sharks are in this boat as well and could face a tough season trying to remain relevant in this league. A harsh call perhaps after Spiro’s best season but history shows that sort of form is an outlier. You can furrget about my REBCats who will hopefully bag the odd win here and there but the reality is my mob is pretty much the West Coast Eagles of this league except with Diet Coke. Lowest seed Billy&TheSwingmen get relegated on that shit name alone.

REB

and hopefully i play you early. Haven't had a win over the FISHys for a while. I kept bumping into you as well! Think I went about 1-4 against you last season.

The Premier League season finally gotten underway with Pool Swimmers smashing Billy Bollocks to the tune of 209 points to kick start their season. Some of the usual suspects in FISH and HORNEy goot off the mark in fine style while Poon Army won the close one against Hondo. Happy days for REBCats in what is probably my first ever win over Captain Who, a real bogey side for the Catters. Mediocre got off to their usual slow start so don’t expect them to fire up for about a month lol. Sharkies look keen to stay in the top eight while Georgie boy and the Sanctum that is inner have started well after lukewarm campaigns in 2024. Head Butters made a fine debut in the top flight when they accounted for a wobbly Jobby and DAISYSDUDS picked a bad week to be slightly off on his excellent scoring shown so far during this season. And we are away folks!

FISH is the new top side after they were far too good for The Willies in gather round. I’ve talked up FISHy plenty of times and usually he fails when I do this so it’s time to talk him up again or he might win the darn thing. Other unbeaten sides are Georgie and the mighty REBCats who have got off to a rare flyer. The real comptroller Atkins’ though might be DAISYSDUDS as predicted by this correspondent pre-season. Number one but not with a bullet, the Hawker has started well and racked them up to knock off the ladder leaders from last week, Pooly. Mediocre have gone against their traditional ‘slow as a wet week’ start to the season with some solid scoring that punted the reigning premier Poon all the way down to 15th on the ladder. The Captain, Ecky and the Swingmen all opened their accounts while winless Willies, Hondo and stone motherless last GOAT look on enviously.

George is off to a flyer this season as they are unbeaten after four rounds following their 254 point thumping of the struggling Sharks. A few teams topped the 2500 mark this week with Captain Who on a real roll at the moment. The Captain racked up 2591 which left a very stiff Mediocre a 100 point loser with an excellent score. DAISYSDUDS were more than a bit stiff as well. They were well on top in their match against my REBCats but Rowell and Holmes failed to fire a shot on Sunday while the Cats had Humphrey pull a 150 out of his arse. FISH, like the Captain are looking very strong already and they plucked the Roosters by over 100 as well. The close one was between Ecky and Pool Swimmers with Pooly sunk by only 8 points. Meanwhile Sanctum got the chocolates over Billy by a mere ten points. Poon Army knocked off Head Butters to keep up with the top eight while The Willies opened their account with an important victory over Jobby who missed the memo that this week was a high scoring round of SuperCoach.

Poon Army sounded a warning shot to the rest of the Premier League in Round 5 after smashing out a Hogg high 2633 to smash an unlucky Billy who did not deserve to lose by 213 points. Poon are now back in the eight and look set to stay with six sides ahead of them looking over their shoulder at the high scoring reigning premier. Regular finalist Captain Who is one of the teams with some breathing space and it doesn’t surprise to see them in the top four despite my pessimistic pre-season prediction for the Captain. The Captain was far too good for Hondo who seems a little off the pace this year.

A couple of teams have made a surprisingly good start to the year. Summer of George is usually midtable but this year they lead the pack with an unbeaten run that now stretches to five matches. FISH is a big scalp in anyone’s language and George has defended his ladder position against top opposition. I’m as surprised as you are that REBCats are in the top four and I owe it all to my vice captain failing and plonking the C on Max Gawn. I love you big Maxxy! Pool Swimmers got an unexpected percentage booster against an out of sorts Roosters while JOBBY opened his account over Ecky who opened a bakery this week. Sharks also got HORNEY and we couldn’t split Head Butters and Mediocre who had to share the points in the first draw of the season. The luckless DAISY was dudded again as Sanctum got the chocolates in the other game.

After six rounds there is a bit of gap between the top eight and the rest as the top sides have consolidated themselves at the right end of the table. The Summer of George may be over though after they were well beaten by Pool Swimmers who moved up to third spot after REBCats fell 5 points short after Lachie Neale missed the team bus down in Hobart. Can’t cry too much though because poor ol Billy scored more than I did but couldn’t match Mediocre but high scoring losses are par for the course in this company. FISH and Poon were this week’s 2500 teams with Poony back on top of the Hogg scoring and FISH going along very nicely at the minute. Besides Mediocre, Hondo and Jobby were others in the chasing pack to get vital wins. The news was not so great for Willies who are now a game behind everyone else, while the Sharks and surprisingly, Roosters, don’t look very scary at all in the scoring department.

18 The Willies 1 6 0 15426 15816 97.53 4

It’s starting to look like the most even Premier League in history as no one team has put their hand up as the dominant force so far this season. FISH and Poon look to be the mostly likely candidates for glory at this stage but teams like Billy and DAISY cannot be discounted even though they are currently out of the eight. Captain Who’s winning streak was brought to an abrupt end as Billy was the hero in their clash. A few lower order batsmen made a few runs with Roosters once again hitting top form at the Cats expense (ffs) and the GOAT and HORNEY getting back on the winners list with HORNEY just getting over the line against Pooly. Summer of George suddenly looks vulnerable at the top and Sharks and The Willies are early favourites for the drop with a poor win-loss record and percentage to boost. Hondo is also unaccustomed to such a precarious ladder prediction while Mediocre has been known to win it from down here even if he was thrashed by DAISY who, like the Roosters, returned to top form. It’s almost impossible to predict who might make top four and top eight…so I won’t…simples! On to next week which is shaping up as carnage city, even at this early stage of the week.

18 The Willies 2 6 0 17760 18080 98.23 8

It’s an absolute logjam in this competition with two matches separating third from 16th. Reigning premier Poon is looking very good for back-to-back with Summer of George hanging on to lead the league after the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion for the REBCats who have hit the wall in the past two weeks after a bright start. A couple of battlers in Sharks and The Willies got vital wins this week while DAISYSDUDS’ comeback is complete with the duds back into the top eight after a stumble earlier in the season. Pool Swimmers and Captain Who are other top teams with a bit of a speed wobble and Ecky suffered a reverse at the hands of Poon while Sanctum quietly snuck up the table. Billy is swinging nicely about now and his scoring was up as the rest of the league’s was down. A solid win over Head Butters sees Billy being a hero and knocking on the door of the eight along with JOBBY who also appears to have his mojo back. It’s the most open Premier League ever folks so who knows what this ladder will look like after the bloody byes finally end.

Poon Army's premiership defence is improving by the week after Summer of George finally coughed up the lead on the premiership as they copped a heavy defeat to inform Inner Sanctum. Poon had his way with the decidedly out of form Roosters as he attempts to become the first ever Hogg coach to win the Premier League three times. FFS lads do something he is unbearable enough already as it is. While we all can't be as decorated as Poon, it was a good week for a few other coaches. JOBBY and Billy continued on their recent run and DAISY has proven he is far too good to be outside the top eight as he scored well again last week. REBCats went from the worst score last week to the best this week and hullo is that ASADA knocking on my door...quick...hide the Farmers Union Iced Coffee! In other news the bottom teams this year look pretty wonky. We know Mediocre is a snake who somehow comes good but others like Sharks and Willies are decidedly on the nose. I won't rip into the Sharks though because I'm playing him this week and the bastard always beats me. Long term Premier League legends Hondo are struggling a bit this season and for some reason the Roosters are plucked (except when he plays me) and his scoring has been way down. No one is cooked yet though but during the bye period the bye king Poon is very much the team to beat.

A couple of Premier League sides went above and beyond with 2100 scores in a round where 2000 was a decent knock. No surprise league heavyweight FISH was one of those. FISH has quite the side this year (I know this as I’m playing him this week EEEK) and they made light work of GOAT whose bubble was burst with a heavy defeat. Two other teams who have not been faring as well also racked up the big numbers last week. Roosters turned back the clock to Christmases past to thump Mediocre who are at present propping up the ladder. The Willies moved out of the relegation zone with their 2126 to pump Butters whose scoring has tanked during the bye period. Billy Swinger has been going great guns in recent weeks and they jumped into the top eight at the expense of the inconsistent REBCats who had their annual loss to the Sharks. Hondo was another side to get a much-needed victory while Poon, Sanctum and Ecky are on the ball while George, Mediocre, HORNEY, and the Captain are not.
