I'd just like the ability to go back in time to all those nights I was out as a single guy, and have at my disposal:
- a fair bit more cash than I had at that particular time.
- a much better place of abode than I usually had at that particular time.
- the knowledge of now, available at that time.

Did okay for a self-described fourth-round draft pick, but I would like myself to go back to the start of the 1991 Australian tour of the West Indies and tell myself, in the sternest voice possible, that growing my hair wildly (including massive goattee) to win a bet on the tour may have been really cool but that it cost me a bit of success in a number of exotic locations.
I would also like to tell myself that there was plenty of time ahead in my 30s and beyond to drink a truck load, and maybe parts of my 20s could be better served applying my energies in other directions. :?

Ahhhhhhh now we're talking.
That Windies tour you're referring to, is that the one where Roland Fishman became everybody's best friend?

Yes, that's the one. Amazing thing about Roland (lord knows where he is now) is that he never carried a pen, paper or a tape recorder at virtually any time, but I'll give him credit that about 97 pct of the conversations he quoted were word-for-word accurate as I remembered the ones I was involved in.
That said, the book wasn't popular with many people at the time, particularly players and their wives. Very glad I was single and didn't have those issues to face, but mum wasn't happy.

"It appears you spent that whole tour drinking?"
"Well, only at night."
"Your grandmother and I are ashamed. I'm not sure your father is too proud either to think you may be an alcoholic."
" . " (stony silence)

Dad just gave me up publicly to mum, so as not to wear any cheap shots himself.

Probably more difficult at the time as you had just emerged from the environment where it was not just the norm, but probably expected that you would behave that way.

Roland's review would've explained a fair bit why Greg Matthew found it hard to fit into the Aussie squad after that. His extrovert ways had been accepted a little easier previously.

Your parents obviously didn't realise the criteria for being a journalist Rog 'latent alcoholism'.

I would suggest that book was really when the line between what Australian journos reported about a sportsman's private life, and what they don't became very blurred.

In the past the journos, like Brian Hansen and his cronies, would holiday with their mates on the Gold Coast at the same time as the end of season footy trips. That wouldn't happen today, as any night time fracas is grist for the mill.

That book was the beginning of the end as far as cricketers confirmed. Up until the end of the 1980s, journos actually travelled on the aussie team bus in places like India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka because secruity was often an issue, and it was easier for them to get around. Journos were on the Aussie bus in India in 89 and Sri Lanka in 92 in my time, but off it by 94 tour of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Never been back since.
A killer blow came on the 93 Ashes tour when Chris Reason of Ch 7, then based in London as their network reporter, came to a day's play down at Somerset and used a directional mike to pick up AB giving Craig McDermott one of the great serves of all time, and McDermott giving it right back to him.
They were arguing over whether McDermott should get another slip or not (the big issues) but Aussie tv just ran the quotes and bleeped out sound of the skipper swearing like an absolute champ, with no context, and Border completely spat it. Didn't speak to the cricket reporters on tour for 3 weeks (as captain) and that was about the last time the Australian team didn't have a media person on tour with them. (they had one at home from the early 80s, after all the underarm stuff went down).

Ahh yes I remember that one - Border and McDermott had some wonderful moments together didn't they.
Captain Grumpy bubbled up again and all the world could hear what he was saying.
He'd love the stump mics these days wouldn't he!

Hmmmmmm.....Rog, I'm sure there's plenty of videos out there on the wide world net on which you can see the painful things women go through.

One I've seen was a waxing of the welcome mat. How girls go through that, I have no idea.

Eagles get their own fansite so I don't have to read about their preseason and the minute details of their ins and outs....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
