I'm not convinced he's the answer. one good year in Brisbane out of five, and Carlton aren't improving under his reign. Nine years as a head coach for a 3 & 3 finals record kinda sums him up.

Took over in 2022 :

2022 - 12 wins, 10 losses
2023 - 15 wins, 1 draw, 10 losses, lost the prelim
2024 - 13 wins, 11 losses, lost the elimination final
2025 - 6 wins, 7 losses

Record from this time last year to now would be disastrous reading

8 wins 17 losses approximately

2 wins vs WC and NM last year
This year 2 wins vs WC, 1 vs NM, Saints, Essendon and Cat$ (lol)

I don't think anyone actually rates their list, do they?

Outside of Curnow, Cripps, Weitering, Walsh and McKay who is the top level talent? Silvagni is better than honest, De Koning the same ( not worth $1.7m but St Kilda are most desperate to land a keeper than North ever were ), McGovern is 30 and ready to ping a hammy any moment.

They get grossly over rated because the spine of Curnow, McKay, Cripps, Weitering, McGovern* looks better than sound, the rest?

Last time I looked, Carlton were ahead of Port on the ladder, but by all means, give them advice on how to suck eggs. :-s

I have said for years there is no pace through the middle and the small forwards are trash.
Foot skills all round are worst in the league

With no first round pick this year TDK needs to go and were then stuck with Pittonet (sigh)

Look at the staring midfield Cripps Hewett Cerra too bloody slow in 2025

I don't know about that, Fantasia and Evans have their best footy ahead of them.

I'd put De Koning with the top tier guys you cited, but otherwise I think your assessment is bang on.

Honestly it is approaching 25 years since Carlton had a list I think was actually above average. Same too for the Bombers.

Their development needs a serious look at, where are any young kids coming through? Who have they developed into a good AFL product post Walsh?

Do number 1 picks get developed in the AFL system or come in ready?

They've managed to make him to backwards, that's how bad their development department is
Too many blokes in their side each week that wouldn't make other teams
Top end as good as any
players 10-23 each week are rotated in and out and are constantly trash

Depends if they get put into the AFL system from when they are 11 years old like the academy rorts and to a lesser extent f/s system.

Carlton haven't had many high end picks recently, lots of trading to get picks in the (25-30) range where its a bit of a raffle...to be honest I don't know what they did to lose their 1st round picks apart from Cerra. Sort of done a Collingwood but with far shitter players (Fantasia LYoung EHollands etc.)

ND picks
2021 1- Motlop (27)
2022 - 4 - Hollands (11) Cowan (30) Binns (32) Lemmey (47)
2023 - 2 - Moir (29) Wilson (34)

The play for Carlton is to off load Cripps to West Coast while they have draft capital. Would get pick 2 and Hawthorns 1st round pick from them at a minimum. Or maybe could do a deal for Reid. Cripps wont be there for the next tilt at a flag, get maximum chips for him now and he's not a teacher
He is one of the most over rated players in the comp, he is a poor captain and leader. You listen to him speak when he's on 360, the lights are on but no ones home, how can he teach anyone anything. The best player doesnt make the best Captain. And dont give me "he's won 2 brownlows" as an argument to shoot me down. We all rate umpiring so highly these days dont we?
I think the over the top love for Cripps from within the club stifles the development of others.

It amazes me when he walks off with a smile on his face after they get another flogging or lose in the last half / quarter

As much as I love Cripps I do agree with you.
But he’s not over rated though as he’s won 2 Brownlows but he isn’t the best captain going around.
Problem is we have no one else to be captain.
I’d give it to Weitering but he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed either.
Walsh has probably stalled a bit as he was a future captain when he started

The club stuffed up
"Cripps needs help" so they get Cerra and Hewett and the destroy Walsh by playing him inside
Now they have no leg speed or class on the outside

Weitering is Carlton's most important player, the rest of the backline is trash 1 on 1 so he defends about 6 blokes

They need to sign TDK but not at the price St Kilda have offered

Putting a lot of hope on Jagga Smith who hasn't even played a game

Voss game plan is shit

Lots of issues for a long time at Carlton

Someone like Hewitt could be Captain? But there is a massive leadership hole after him and Weitering? I dont think anyone under 28 has potential leader tag. There isnt any young player that you could say will develop into one of your best 6 players within 3 years and thats a problem, most of the young players in the squad you wouldnt be able to guarentee are still playing AFL in 3 years time. Walsh, Smith, Campos, Lord are about all i would give you.
