AFL 2025

Talk on the national game

Re: AFL 2025

Postby dedja » Sun Jul 27, 2025 11:43 am

Following on from my Round 20 post, despite all the so-called equalisation measures, for mine the AFL comp is not in a good place.

Too many teams = not enough quality players, large thrashings and a huge divide between the best and worst teams, a glut of middle of the road sides clogging the ladder, an AFL out of touch with the fabric of the game by way of their farcical tribunal process and decisions, constant pointless rule changes, pathetic score review system and inconsistent umpiring standards to name a few.

The good matches are great viewing, but they are few and far between. Enjoy watching sides like GWS and Brisbane for example when they are on song, much like Richmond when they were winning flags.

Is the obsession with copying US sports, revenue from media rights, increasing the number of teams, and seemingly ignoring the paying patrons who attend matches killing the game?

Maybe it’s just me, an old fart losing touch and not keeping up.

What a finish coming up.

I've done about 8 ladder predictors and I reckon the loser of Brisbane / Hawthorn in the final round might miss out unless one of them gets an upset win.

Hawthorn have Adelaide (AO), Collingwood, Melbourne, Brisbane (G)

Brisbane have Collingwood (MCG), Sydney (Gabba), Fremantle (Optus), Hawthorn

Hawthorn will need to beat Adelaide or Collingwood and Brisbane will need to beat Collingwood or Fremantle away from home.

If Brisbane can beat Fremantle they might miss the 8 ( Fremantle ). GWS could get 4th and the Bulldogs miss out depending on this weeks game ( Bulldogs v GWS ).

Adelaide could still finish 5th if results go the right / wrong way.

Gold Coast could pinch 4th.

Huge month ahead.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Does that now take Toby Greene to 16 games suspended which then equates to 12 under the AFL's 25% reduction rule.

His going to have to be careful, his getting dangerously close to that 16 weeks.

I think Toby would be a walking target if he ever went back to play local footy, it just wouldn't be worth the effort.

It used to be 50% discount but was reduced to 25% in 2018

(c) AFL Competition Career
i) Any Suspension period served by a Player during their AFL Competition career shall carry over to non-AFL Competitions. However, any such Suspension period shall be reduced by 25% for the purposes of this Policy (to the decimal point). For example, if a Player receives a total Suspension of six (6) matches whilst playing in the AFL Competition, only four and one half (4.5) matches shall carry over for the purposes of this Policy. For the avoidance of doubt, the 25% discount does not apply where an AFL Competition Player receives a Suspension for an incident while playing outside of the AFL Competition.
ii) If:
a. a Player who has ceased being a registered Player in the AFL Competition would have been deemed to have served a combined total of less than sixteen (16) matches Suspension based on the old 50% discount afforded to AFL Players in section 3.2.2(c)(i) of this Policy; and
b. due to the change in the applicable discount from 50% to 25% applicable from the 2018 season that Player, as a result of the change, is now deemed to have served a combined total of more than sixteen (16) matches Suspension,
then that Player will, from the commencement of the 2018 season, be deemed to have carried over a total Suspension period of fifteen (15) matches from their AFL Competition career provided that:
c. the Player commenced playing in a non-AFL Competition before or in the 2017 season; and
d. has continued to play in a non-AFL Competition each season thereafter.

If i had to guess and putting all the talk on other players together, i think he's Hawthorn bound.
I would rather he's not, he might end up a great player but for mine its a massive risk for the money he wants. I would rather have Butters.

The fact Worpel hasnt signed, not even sure if we've offered him a contract, probably a low ball offer if we have. We havent been linked to any talk about Butters. Geelong supposedly going after NWM suggests they arent in the race for Harley. I doubt he goes to a rebuilding team. We have plenty of cap room so it suggests someone big should be coming in the door, we have Carltons 1st and 2nd pick, ours next year plus Lewis or Chol should get it done. Id have NWM in a heart beat, by this time next year he will be the best player in the game
