Never seen it before and not sure if it is an instruction just for a GF or not.

Its a standard rule in AdFL, umpires can direct the the timekeepers to start time on/off for delays where there is not normally time on

I would bet dollars to donuts that the kids umpiring would have no idea that they could instruct the clock to be stopped, either.

I use this regularly in life and so many people don't get it. Bravo sir.

Same thing happened in the Div 4W GF - umps stopped the clock in the 3rd quarter for a stretcher. Clock never stopped previously, so I was surprised when it happened.

AdFL Regs:

36.12 Time-on may be initiated in matches where time-on is not played at the direction of both the officiating field umpires.

In our 9 seasons back in the AdFL I’ve only seen this applied 2 or 3 times and from memory it’s been for a stretcher in a fairly close game. But if I’m an umpire you need to be pretty sure of the time wasting motive by applying it for any other reason.

In the case of the Div 4W, it wasn't a time-wasting situation. The girl that went down was on the team that was losing at the time.

I was more referring to where the umpire might deem intentional time wasting such as what was being implied with that U17.5 GF. But those kicks that went out on the full are still giving the ball back to the opposition and even an experienced mature umpire would be brave to inform the timekeepers to stop the clock.

Only one was out on the full, the other two were booted after the ball had crossed the boundary line.

Well that's a free kick and probable yellow card and 25/50 metre penalty at any level of community footy. Surely the Para Hills lads knew that risk and if they got away with it then that's just as much on the umpires than it is on Para Hills.

Agree totally. You can question the PH's coach's tactics, but if the umpires pulled up the first one, it likely wouldn't have happened a second time.

And therein lies the problem, having young kids in charge of teams of a similar age, rarely works.

I know first hand how little feedback these junior umps get from the mob that run it, part of the reason why two of my kids were one and done umpires.

I see Plympton lost the U18 Girls Div 1 Grand Final. They were a bit unlucky, given they had the first week off for finishing top, Glenunga forfeited in week 2, they got another week off in week 3 and the GF was their first game in a month.
