From the Australian

"Westpac chief Anthony Miller has called on Australian industry and political leaders to find a way for the country to build more homes priced at $500,000, to match the borrowing capacity of average wage earners now locked out of the property market."

How about Mr Miller, you stop ripping Joe Public off and we might be able to afford our own houses?

The ASX 200 pared back early losses to finish with a small gain, largely thanks to Westpac announcing a $7 billion full-year profit

Yes, ripping off.

Look, I'm pretty dense with financial matters, but how how does Westpac's profits stop people being able to afford homes?

Extra percentage on the interest rate for one.

It use to be the cash rate was basically the interest rate, now there are plenty of rate points between them.

Cash rate - 3.6%

Westpac Home Loans - 5.24% Basic Variable

Account keeping fees.

On and on and on.

Cheapest I could find (in a 2 minute search) was P&N Bank at 4.89%. On a $500K loan, that's $108 a month less than Westpac.

Whilst I get the gist of the complaint, I don't think Westpac (or any other bank for that matter) is the reason people can't buy houses.

Westpac $7bn
ANZ $3.6bn
Commonwealth $10.2bn
NAB $3.58bn ( Half year )

If you don't think the banks making a combined estimated profit of $30bn for 2025 doesn't impact on the housing market I'll go he.

I appreciate they have stake holders and they're running a business....but come on.

$7b profit off a Asset base of $1.04t is a 6.7% return, hardly gouging the public.

Then add that we all benefit via our Super and a strong banking system is something we take for granted, other countries look on in envy.

Then add that banks are one of the biggest tax payers and employers in the country who are heavily regulated by the Govt, which paid off when we all had to face 13 interest rates hikes and while it made things tight, we didn't see people having to sell up on mass.

There are over 60 lenders out there in the market, so plenty of competitive pressure.

Insurance companies however....

Not dense Wenchy....

As mentioned above about interest rates on cash/mortages.

But also credit card interest rates, fees on low interest accruing accounts, the list goes on.

That all makes profit for the bank. If the bank sacrificed some of that profit, then people could possibly afford to save for a deposit and hence, get a home loan.

On this topic of banks, im no financial expert but dont we all contribute to their profits and the inflation rate by using our cards for every transaction?
$100 is worth nothing after 100 transactions if there is a 1% surcharge yet a $100 note is still worth $100 after an infinite amount of cash transactions.
Thats something we can control as opposed to Albo's out of control spending and policies.
This 5% deposit has been an absolute disaster. Paying off 20% of student debt another one. All very good for getting the vote of the young ones who dont give a shit about politics.
Now he wants to take the power i generate with my solar and give it to those who dont have it for free and eventually he will charge me for the privilege of doing so.
