There’s varying reports of how long they last but it seems that you should be safe for at least 20 years if you behave yourself.

It’s a bit like how long does a vehicle engine last, some go 500,000+ kms, whilst others blow up at 150,000.

It’s a balance between your current pain and life impact vs the longevity of the procedure. There is no easy or correct answer,

Loving these updates though.

It's really interesting talking to people now that I've got this done. Some say their knee is buggered but at 45/46/47 their surgeon is saying that they have to wait. I got my arthroscope at 53.5 and my surgeon said that "I'll do the replacement tomorrow if you want". I contemplated holding on but now I'm glad I didn't because I'm better than what I was before the op. I am conscious that I might need it replaced when I'm 75 but I'll worry about that when and if the time comes. I spoke to my surgeon about doing it now due to quality of life and I can see how my life will be improved by having it done now, rather than waiting till 70 (which he said was the recommended age).

In hospital, there were three guys in my ward, all from the same surgeon. One 70 in Dec, had his other knee replaced at 68. He wasn't worried about having to go through this again on either knee. One was 60 and had his done through workcover, so it was more having to have it done and then me at age 55.

So is it the surgeon? Is it the person's age? Or is it a combo? Yes, I'm hearing that 20 years is the expectancy of the knee too. But that's going to depend on a lot of elements. Weight, activity, bone density the list goes on.

Thanks re the updates, I'll keep sending them through. I was talking to the better half this morning and loathing the fact that I didn't have a diary of anyone who'd gone through this to refer to. And also, I didn't take the numbers of the guys in hospital down either to compare where I'm at with them. It literally is a voyage of discovery day by day, hour by hour.

I'm in the same boat, I'm coming up on 50 next year and reading that some replacements can last up to 25 years in encouraging, as I've had more than my fair share of knee surgery.

I'm going to be dictated to by pain levels and mobility/quality of life. If I have to get another one done, that's future me's problem!

Shit, I'm pretty lucky then, I get sore knees and ankles a bit from running on concrete but geenerally I'm ok. The ankle that I used on my front foot for bowling has had a permanent bulge for about 20 years and looks like a rainbow for the same amount of time.

It's my calves and hammies that go ping on a regular basis, usually during like the 2nd quarter of umpiring the first footy gmae of the day when I'm doing 3 back to back or in the 1st quarter of a crucial A Grade match.

This seriously needs its own dedicated thread.

My wife is due for a hip replacement next month, it’s been affected her for a couple of years but has greatly deteriorated in the last couple of months, severely affecting quality of life so it has to be done ASAP.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Great discussion and thanks for sharing.

I can only bend my left knee to 90 degrees currently, working with the physio to try and get more movement but seem to have hit a limit.

On Monday, after playing golf on it Sunday arvo, my knee felt the best it had felt for months, went to the gym yesterday and did too much on it (cause it was feeling good) and its blown up today, trying to find the balance of what your knee can take is the key but geez it is frustrating, its days like this I feel I need to get it replaced.

I've had three knee recons and my right knee is cooked now. Went and saw Clarnette as I just wanted to get the replacement done and once they did MRI, he said that replacement wasn't needed as yet and it was all arthritis and replacement wouldn't make any difference. He said I'll probably need one down the track but at the moment, just got to suck it up and take anti-inflams and pain killers. He said he could do an arthroscope and remove some cartilage but there was a risk with that as it could form some crystals or crystallsation (something like that anyway) in my knee joint and I would be in worse pain which couldn't be fixed. I was spewing as I thought I could get something done which would stop the pain.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

One of the first things Liptak said to me was "If you need it done, you're old enough". This was 5 years ago

Ahh, long-ish story which I'll try and cut down. Played footy till I was 14ish and had some growth plate issues in my left knee (the one replaced) but that didn't cause it. I also played cricket till I was 14/15 but that also didn't cause it. I played cricket as a batsman and had some potential but got bored of it. A school mate and I decided at 18/19 to start playing cricket and footy. So I rock up to training, get selected for numpty grade, and in my first game we were bowled out with 4 overs to go. Which meant we bowled one over. They threw me the ball to open. I had no idea what I was doing, and I'd only just net bowled to fill time in before batting at trainings.

Anyway, I end up bowling and bowling and bowling and then one umpire pulled me up and said "you know you're putting your foot length ways on the bowling crease". I said "do I"? Anyway, after twisting my body around for a few seasons and playing footy, my meniscus was shot. At 21 I had my first arthroscope and the meniscus was so mangled they just removed it. After my second one at 23, I was told to stop playing sport full stop.

I did stop playing cricket at 27/28 with the odd fill in game here and there but I kept playing footy till I was 31/32. My knee, in particular my left was shot. I used to ice it after trainings, after games and in the off season. I had multiple baker's cysts in it which prohibited me from running 'properly' which I never divulged to any coaches or trainers. So suffice it to say, I've been in pain or discomfort since the age of 20/21 with the exception of immediately after the arthroscopes or Euflexa injections.

The past 2 years have been extraordinarily uncomfortable both in life and trying to sleep. I feel like I'm walking 'upright' rather than waddling like my son suggested I was - so that's an immediate benefit.
