for the dog punters, i have it on good authority that there will be no bookie at angle park for the wednesday meeting at the end of the month p.dammarell has given it away as its not viable enough for him.

if bookies want to be viable & make money put up decent prices & bet about 120% not the 200 % they do now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is why people bet on the tote
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

vicious circle Bayman- the Bookie bets to 120%, he gets slaughtered by the pro's. As stated somewhere else, you can't make a book on races (any form) as the mug money has disappeared into the TAB/Pubs. Only the hardened Pro's go to the track, & most times, they'll all be backing the same thing. One of the Bookies who used to field at Angle Park years ago, gave up Bookmaking & took up punting!

Bayman you should get a job in the press.
If Dammarell does vacate Angle Park on wednesdays
who will take over?
No on course bookie will mean less patronage for the
club and less TAB turnover.
Incidently $5-00 for a stubby seems extravagent as well
for the beer drinkers that stillm go there.

thought so, thanks pr, what you said is correct that not many are there only the 'smarties" etc but i went to the dogs on the night of the adelaide cup heats & in one race two dogs were 6/4 to win ok i accept that but both dogs were 1/20 ($1.05) concession my point/? is if you want to lay /make $$$ you have to punt & give the punters a chance lets face it on the tote with big pools they were always going to pay $1.40 or thereabouts for a place, if i was the bookie i'd be laying both win (both cant win) & laying both concession probably one at 1/2 the other at 1/3 & hoping at least one would get a knock & be out of business with a chance of both being beaten as it turned out they ran the quinella but one of them was very lucky to get through after early trouble

as mentioned above the bookies dont do anything to encourage business.

ive heard a bookie mention a few times 'i wanted to lay that favourite but there is no money and i couldve got a couple of hundred on a monday or thursday' etc well if you dont like it put up the big odds and let the punters on if you are that confident the dog is no good.

bookies just bet against the tote as it is anyway and quite often you will notice the 'big overs' on the tote, but thats because there is probably 5 dogs over the odds.

i just hope that there is a bookie out there who can see that there is good business to be made, if they are prepared to have balls.

Bayman is on the ball
My contacts have confirmed that Peter Dammerell
will vacate wednesday dog meetings in a couple
more meetings.
Bayman and Mighty Tiger have put the blame solely
on the Bookmaker, this is a trifle unfair as we tend
to forget that a bookie is operating on a racecourse
and this his his income.
Bookies are in effect businessmen and if they cant
make a profit there is no logical reason to stay there.

I would also blame the race clubs who charge very
expensive pricings for beverages ,alcohol, and food.
They also charge admittance fees when every TAB,
pub, internet betting agencies do not charge.
They also slug you for form guides and also expect
you to waste your petrol to get there.
Personally i can stay home bet on my local and
interstate TABS, bet with Best Bookies,Betfair,
and my Bookie by phone, watch the races on foxtel and
get free formguides on the internet.
Also i can have a 375 ml coke for 55cents from Coles
instead of paying $3-00.
I can also buy my echo for about $1-20 in the carton
instead of paying $5-00 etc etc.

PS : the only reason i had left to go to Angle Park
on a wednesday was to use Peter Dammerells expert
markets to utilise on trifectas, doubles and trebles.
and occasionally have a bet with him.

Without him there on a wednesday i will stay home.

Richard Pierce (?) trained a Gawler specialist, in about 96.. can't think of the name, but it went to Strath, started 3's on, I put the house on & Kerry's Crown beat it at 12's... was never a threat.

i accept that it isnt entirely the bookies fault, that he isnt getting business and all those other factors you mentioned do have an influence.

but if the bookie wants to make it a business surely he should be thinking about putting up better odds.

it is very forseeable in the next 10-15 years when all the old pensioners drop off that attendances will drop enormously at the racetracks for all 3 codes and the codes arent doing anything to encourage people to go.

You go to the races and pay around $10 to get in and i stand corrected on the correct amount as i havent been in over a year and even then i had a free ticket. So you pay your $10 to get in and what does that entitle you to? the food at the the races is terrible, its better at the hospital and it is over-priced.
You can save yourself $10 and go have a counter meal at the local pub and spend the arvo in there or you can just sit at home and place the bets over the net on any account you have and you dont have to worry about lining up to get a bet on or shoving through the crowd.

MIGHTY TIGER

i completely agree with your logic on why people dont go
to the racecourses anymore...the clubs need new stratergies
to attract younger people.

To me it seems the clubs have adopted a simple practice

that is:

if the crowds are dwindling by about 10% every 3 years it
seems to be that some clubs raise the admittance by 10 %
to compensate for this.

What you have in effect is a domino reaction at the races

when10000 people went they charged about $1
when 5000 people went they charged about $2
when 2500 people went they charged about$4
when 1000 people go now they charge $9 or $10 now ?

eventually in 20 tears time when Bayman and i are the only 2 going to the
races they will have to charge us $5000 each admittance
to make up the budget.

harsh words i guess

and dont forget the carpark and racebook expenses on top
and petrol and ..............

maybe we can get Greg Mcatee to do the wednesdays!!!!

maybe those words were harsh but they were all true and its time the administrators of the codes actually did something productive on there high salaries.

I mean Steve Ploubodis (however you spell it) from the SAJC, lied about the crowd on Adelaide Cup day to the tune of 10,000 people, which = a lot of money when you charge $25 or something ridiculous.

God knows why the SAJC got him, apparently he was at the SANFL and nobody liked him there and they wanted him out and they gave him a brilliant reference so that the SAJC would take him.

i think he would struggle to run a chook raffle.
