Rushby's first theory = Distance from Glenelg

Rushby's first theory = Distance from Glenelg

Postby Rushby Hinds » Mon Nov 26, 2007 8:53 am

In my job I spend a lot of time talking to people from interstate, often chat about the suburb/city they live.

A typical conversation, if they ask me where I live in Adelaide would be:

Me "Have you ever been to Adelaide?"

Them "yes, visited there once about 10 years ago" (everyone has been here once...)

Me" Did you visit Glenelg" or "Do you know where Glenelg is?"

Them, 98% yes to either of those

Me"ok, i live about 20 minutes South down the coast from there"

Gets them every time.

Talking to a few other Adelaide people, many of them do the same thing as well

"I live 5 minutes from Glenelg, South east" etc.

Is every Suburb in Adelaide rated in its distance from the Bay? :?
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

That would give Glenelg itself a zero rating

It only works for people like you who live in the south-western suburbs, Rushby. There is more to Adelaide than just your neck of the woods.

Personally, I relate everything to the city. Living 10 minutes away helps with that.

I give directions to people based on locations of pubs - if they don't know where the Hampstead Hotel is, they aren't the type of person I want in my home.

Living at Lockleys, I tell em near the Airport which is 10 minutes from the city or 5 minutes from Glenelg.

Nah - they probably just make a Richmond-Tigers-Glenelg connection and that is why they ask if Richmond is near Glenelg!
