New Glenelg FC Website

Postby Wedgie » Fri Apr 07, 2006 8:28 am

Better late than never (been offline for a couple of days) but someone from the Bay asked me to post this for them.
My opinion on the new website? Looks like a carbon copy of the Norwood site being done by the same company but why not as I think appearance wise the Norwood site looked the best and the Bays site isn't far behind, still a long way to catch up on North's site as far as content goes though

I think its sensational that clubs have upped the ante as far as good websites are concerned, there's only a couple lagging behind but 5 years ago they were all pretty ordinary, getting there slowly but surely.
I also think that the SANFL should continue to embrace the internet as a way of spreading the word about the greatest sporting comp in the world as the paper and radio (mainstream) coverage isn't expanding.
It should also provide as much support as possible to 5RPH, C31 and the ABC.

I personally congratulated the club upon its release. A really good effort.

However, i'm not sure how valuable a flashy website is if it doesn't have the ability to directly earn revenue. The lack of an online payment facility for merchandise and membership is a shame. I'll gladly buy a 3-pack of grand final DVDs when this facility is made available!

I communicated this to the club, and they said that online payment is a large extra cost that isn't in their budget. Ah well :(

How much more can it cost?
Take me 10 mins for free.
Even easier than setting up the Media Guide selling online as they have credit card facilities already set up at all of the clubs.
Pro Web Designers must charge the earth for small things (which wouldn't suprise me).

The have apparently not heard of osCommerce or Agorra and similar e-commerce applications. Cost = $0.00
Paypal. Cost = $ a bit per transaction.
Visa/Mastercard gateway via a bank eg. NAB and Which Bank? cost = probably less than Paypal.
Could also be used for electronic file sales like MP3's screensavers etc.

You appear to be in the know with this ecommerce stuff. Do you think you could contact the club and let them know the costs in setting this sort of thing up? They may have received some bad advice from an overzealous web developer.

I really think this is something that should be persued by all SANFL clubs.

It looks pretty good. It really doesn't take much effort on the part of the club itself to get a decent looking website with appropriate content. There's plenty of supporters with the talent who are willing to do it for nix.
