I miss the very Aussies slang that died out in the early 80s that was WACKER.

Everyone in the 70s was a Wacker!!
You'd always greet mates by saying "How are ya Wacker??"

Wanker seemed to have a bit more umph and took its place in our language.

I think we should all make an attempt to get the word WACKER back into daily usage!

this was used as a term of endearment

Our old next door neighbours before they moved to Queenlands were the "Wecker" family.

We used to call them the "Wacker Weckers"...mind you great people and they used to roll the eyes
when the wacker came out...

My memory of my dad talking to his mates was that a bastard was a very derogatory term but a 'something' bastard, be that lucky bastard, good-looking bastard, tall bastard etc etc was a mates' term. Ie; as long as you put something in front of it, that was fine, but if you actually called someone a straight bastard, you were asking for a fight.
Don't remember him using wacker much at all.

I too long for a return of the days, when 2 Aussies would have a conversation, & foreigners would think "WTF are they talking about?"

Nova had a parody a few years ago on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, which went-
"Hey mate, youse stubbies are too tight"
"Yeah, youse look like a galah"


also, they parodied The Singing Bee
Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around" is played then stops
followed by a female ocker singing "You're going home in the back of a Divvie van"

My aged parent still uses some Aussie slang from his years in NSW back in the 50's.

As kids if we did something stupid he'd say things like 'What did you want to do that for you great galah?'

Our first family dog, a red-coated Irish terrier, was named Bluey.

He did use 'bastard' a far bit as long as mother didn't catch him (very strict Irish catholic)

He probably uses a lot more terms that I haven't realised are Aussie in origin.

I say keep the Yankie speak out and save your own slang...it's part of your national identity
