To paraphrase one of the Mods, criticising Graham Cornes is like criticising Barrie Robran you are a mental midget.

It is no coincidence that God and Graham cornes both have the same first initial!!

So all of you who criticise the best footballer in Australia circa 1980, go and say three hail mary's and ask for salvation!!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I wasn't going to buy into this argument until I read that, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen written in my life.
Cornes and Robran can't even be compared as footballers let alone people.

So no, criticising Grahme Cornes is not like criticising Robran, it would be more like criticising David Wildy of which you're welcome to do.

Funny, Barrie Robran puts Graham Cornes in the same category as himself, Russell Ebert, Peter Carey, Paul Bagshaw, Rick Davies and one other player (I can't remember who) as part of the magnificent 7 group of SANFL footballers of the 1970s. My source is the Boys from the Bay DVD

Far be it for me to criticise an opinion of Barrie Robran but if you want to.......

Given that he played against all those blokes he is probably in a better position than us to pass judgement on the quality of the players....

I don't know if the seventh player is Fred Bills or one of Norwoods greats of he 70s Michael Taylor??

Its not funny at all, Barrie would put hundreds of players in the same category as himself, that's just the sort of guy he is.
And your ability to assess other footballers has nothing to do with your own ability.
2 completely different things.
Its subjective but I'd be pretty safe in saying that a majority with any sort of footy knowledge or that saw both play over their career wouldn't have Cornes and Robran in the same category as footballers.
I don't think Cornes is a legend in the AFL Hall of Fame.

You've missed my main point though, people are talking about the way Cornsey acts and talks.
In that subject (which this has drifted onto) there is no comparison.
Personally I'm not criticising Cornes as loves soundling like a clown to get a bit of attention.
He opens himself up to criticism and he loves it.
Wildy's on a similar scale at 5AA and as I said go for it, compare those 2 away and abuse them silly, I have no problem!
Me blindly backing Wildy up if he got criticised on here would be a very fair and close comparison, but I wouldn't do that as I'm a bit more open minded than that.

But as I said before there is no comparing Robran and Cornes on anything, except on producing 2 AFL players each!

Hmm I susppose that is why he has a magnifient 7 not a magnificent 100....

Not questioning Barries humility as I have seen it first hand myself. He is a champion footballer and a champion bloke.

I am smart enough to know that Barrie Robran and Russell Ebert are a toss up for the gold and silver medal as the best footballers of the 70s, But Cornes, Bagshaw and Davies are close behind vieing for the Bronze and not that far behind either IMHO.

Maybe it is Cornesy (& Davies) opinions on the field, and now radio that cost them Magarey votes not their brilliance as a player....

Sorry If I'm going on about this but I feel some people don't give Graham Cornes his due when he is by any stretch of the imagination a great SANFL player despite the fact he acts it up on radio to polarise opinions and to get people to call in as is the formaula of talk radio.

Don't blame him blame the morons who keep ringing up and listening to it that encourage him.....

Commercial radio commentry will change when people don't listen to it. Unfortunately that pratt Peter Walsh on the ABC doesn't give us much of an alternative to listen too compared to commercial radio

Barrie is a very modest person- too modest (nearly every sportsman on the face of the planet would do well to learn some humility/modesty from him). In fact, I'm surprised he accepted being in North's Team of the Century!

Fair enough Tassie, but people are criticising Cornse's comments/views on the SANFL today so it belongs on the SANFL board.
If you want to discuss any of Barrie Robran's comments/views on the SANFL today feel free too.

If you want to push Cornsey's bus as to how good he was (which is irrelevent in this topic) and that you think he was underrated as a player feel free to start a topic on the History Forum.

Personally on the very few times I do listen to 5AA I enjoy Cornsey's stirs as he reminds me very much of myself at times!
But I also enjoy Rucci too so I must have problems.

I think you lost the Robran vs. Cornes comaprison debate tassie - but let's face it, you were never going to win that one but I admire your tenacity in the face of great odds

Robran - AFL hall of fame member and the only non VFL player to have been elevated to legend status. End of any arguement (.) Full stop.

I'm a bit lost here. Can someone please tell me what contributions Robran and Cornes made to the Round 2 Final scores?

As a Glenelg supporter I am naturally going to jump to the defence of Graham Cornes in the same way I expect North supporters to defend Barrie Robran, Port supporters to defend Russell Ebert, Sturt supporters to defend Paul Bagshaw Norwood supporters to defend Garry McIntosh.

As supporters of our clubs we are always going to biased in our arguements and comments as we always look at our clubs and its legends through rose coloured glasses.

On that I am Guilty as charged as I reckon Graham Cornes is the greatest.

At least this thread hasn't diverted to that old chestnut of ours the salary cap!!!

Getting back to the topic of the thread has Eagleshaslanded:

1. Failed to pay his internet account
2. Smashed his computer in disgust after hearing the scores Saturday night vowing never to post again, or
3. In still stuck in the fetal position rocking gently to and fro mumbling to himself we lost to the bays how can we win a flag? , we lost to the bays how can we win a flag?....

Come on fella we just want one post to see that you are ok....

PS If I ever go into into hiding after Glenelg lose please roundly castigate me as a hypocrit

I don't for a second rate Cornes higher than Robran, but I reakon there are far better arguments than the one you have just presented. Any evidence based on halfwit Victorians should not be admissable in a South Australian court!

I listen to 5AA all the time - I don't mind Cornsey at all (KG I don't mind, but in small doses). And, I don't mind Rucci at all.

Did anyone hear them interview Eddie the other evening about Collingwood's jumper?

Yes Diss,I heard that interview,KG spluttered and mummbled his way through it.

One thing though,Eddie, for once, had a decent argument. There is no chance that Adrian and Andy will be willing to take him into court and battle it out.
