Good luck JTC!! Go Burnley, interesting to read about Staffordshire-based Chasetown, the “smallest team” to reach the third round, from Southern League Division One Midlands, hosting Cardiff City. Good luck to all the teams in lower divisions.

Also spark a debate as to if its time for an "Australia Cup". I think not as there's a good chance some A-League clubs would be severely embarassed by losses to state league sides which would be the last thing an embattled FFA would need but an interesting debate none the less, this from foxsports:

THIS weekend sees one of the most “charismatic” days of the football calendar. Of course, what once was a day has now become something approaching a week due to the demands of television scheduleing, but you get the picture. The third round of the FA Cup sees the “big boys” enter the competition, and their grandiose entrance offers the minnows the chance either to play on a big stage or to see the biggest names of the game playing on a mudheap in front of the biggest crowd the stadium has seen in history (often quite possibly just 8000 fans packed like sardines into the stands).

This year, we have few ties that truly make the punter salivate, which pretty much reflects the polarisation of power in English football, but we do have prospects of shocks with Huddersfield Town hosting Birmingham City, and Bristol Rovers travelling up the M5 to play Fulham at Craven Cottage. We also have Burnley hosting Arsenal and, best of all, Staffordshire-based Chasetown, the “smallest team” to reach the third round, from Southern League Division One Midlands, hosting Cardiff City from the Championship. Sussex-based Havant and Waterlooville, from the Conference South, meanwhile travel to play Swansea City. Not only do the minnows get a chance to play the heroes, they very occasionally win: the victory of non-league Hereford United over Newcastle United, in 1972, is still considered by many pundits to be the “greatest” result in FA Cup history.

These tales of folklore have been nagging at me for quite some time, and they’ve got me thinking that football in Australia simply must develop a national cup competition. OK, so the logistics might be something approaching a nightmare, but surely the guys who turn out each week for such as Darwin City Buffalos deserve a chance to play against, say, A-League champions Melbourne Victory at Telstra Dome.

Surely it is not beyond the bounds of possibility to arrange first-round knockout regional fixtures, with the winners progressing to play another team from that region. After a number of rounds, each region could provide a team to go into the next stage of the competition. Of course, teams from the various levels of the game in Australia would enter the competition at different stages before the A-League clubs enter the fray. At some point, we’re going to get some team from rural South Australia, say, travelling interstate for what will surely be the club’s biggest day in history.

Now the Buffalos may well be unlikely to get all the way through the competition to play the Victory (there again, who would have thought that Montceau-les-Mines would reach the French Cup semi-finals last season) but it is surely not beyond reality to imagine a New South Wales Premier League club knocking off the A-League champions in a one-off tie. And such results can only help to spread the gospel of the game through the country.

Minnows enjoying a good cup run in England always draw progressively bigger crowds, as more and more people from the team’s area wish to become involved. I still recall the story of former work colleagues who really did not care for football travelling from Woking to Birmingham to watch the Cards, “their” non-league club, defeated West Brom in the third round in 1990-1991 before then travelling to Merseyside for the fourth-round fixture against Everton at Goodison, where the team lost only 1-0 and hit the post in the final minutes; among the best days out my mates had experienced. A sense of community develops. And the club, importantly enjoys a financial boost.

Similar results can only be good for the game in Australia, can they not?

Nah but we had a great Prelim against them at Olympic Park when Ross Aloisi put away a cracker and we won one nil, I bus'd it over for tht game with the City fans, a great trip, but not as great as a week later when we beat the Knights there.

11 million dollar loss, esculating junior club fees, diminished FTA coverage and the fact the U17s and young soceroos both failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time ever (despite getting as far as being runner up in the NSL days).
Not to mention that a club like Adelaide United are already about to announce a float of shares.
I could add the decline in play at the national league level despite less players being used but despite facts to back that up (ie players making Soceroors best side or second or third best side) that's very debatable so I wont add that one.
I have a few other reasons but I'll leave them.

It's great to see Chasetown in the 3rd Rd but they better not pull off an upset against the Bluebirds, how embarrassing that would be! We are in good form though so should get the win.

Burnley defender David Unsworth - who won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995 - misses the game through suspension, while Clarke Carlisle (hamstring) is also sidelined and Alan Mahon (groin) is doubtful, but Joey Gudjonsson and John Spicer are back after suspension.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to hand keeper Jens Lehmann a rare start while striker Nicklas Bendtner is back from a ban.
Defenders William Gallas and Gael Clichy are likely to be rested while striker Emmanuel Adebayor (hamstring) is also set to miss the game along with Dutch ace Robin van Persie.
Arsenal are the only side to have retained the FA Cup in the last 25 years (2002-3)

Derby v Sheff Wed 14:00
Defender Danny Mills go straight into the Derby squad having joined on loan from Manchester City. However, Stephen Bywater, Jay McEveley, Dean Leacock, Andy Todd, David Jones, Stephen Pearson, Rob Earnshaw, Andy Griffin and Marc Edworthy are all out while Giles Barnes (hamstring) and Claude Davis (knee) are carrying injuries.
Francis Jeffers may return to Wednesday's starting line-up after ankle trouble. Defenders Richard Wood (shoulder), Frank Simek (ankle) and winger Wade Small (hamstring) remain sidelined.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis welcomes back fit-again Andy Wilkinson and Ricardo Fuller for the visit of Sam Allardyce's men, but the Championship highfliers must do without key trio Salif Diao (knee), Dominic Matteo (foot) and Rory Delap (thigh).
Newcastle will be without forward Obafemi Martins and midfielder Geremi as the pair link up with the Nigeria and Cameroon squads respectively ahead of the African Nations Cup, while troubled midfielder Joey Barton will also miss the game.

Speaking of shocks, here are few biggies from the 3rd round

1 Hereford United 2 Newcastle United 1, replay, 1972
Postponed three times because of bad weather, this match was worth waiting for. With Hereford’s players suffering from cramp and losing 1-0 to a goal by Malcolm Macdonald, Ronnie Radford’s late 35-yard equaliser sparked an invasion by supporters on the Edgar Street mudbath. And that was before Ricky George hit the extra-time winner to make Hereford the first nonLeague side to defeat a first-division team in 23 years.

2 Sutton United 2 Coventry City 1, 1989
This was the most recent occasion that a top-flight team have been knocked out by a nonLeague side. With goals from Tony Rains (who went on to become the club’s assistant manager) and Matthew Hanlan, Sutton humbled a Coventry side who had won the trophy only 18 months earlier and were sixth in the first division. In the next round, Sutton went on to lose 8-0 away to Norwich City.

3 Walsall 2 Arsenal 0, 1933
Herbert Chapman’s costly, brilliant and dominant team were weakened by an epidemic of influenza, so the manager was forced to recruit players from amateur football in order to rest his reserves. That overconfident plan backfired and the third division (north) team hustled and bustled an Arsenal lineup that featured seven international players and won through a headed goal from Gilbert Alsop and a penalty from Bill Sheppard.

4 Worcester City 2 Liverpool 1, 1959
Liverpool were in the second division, but this defeat by a Southern League club was still a shock. Postponed by the cold to a Thursday, Worcester took the lead through Tommy Skuse before an own goal doubled the advantage. A Liverpool penalty came too late and the defeat contributed to the departure later in the year of Phil Taylor, the Liverpool manager. His replacement? Bill Shankly.

I was pretty bloody nervous for a while there, thankfully Whittingham levelled in first half stoppage time and we managed to pull away in the second half. Great effort by Chasetown to not only make it this far, but take the lead.

Well, we lost. One really soft goal, and one good goal. Lafferty was sent of, disgraceful refereeing decision and killed the game for us really.
Put up a good fight though and can hold our heads high.

Derby 2 - 2 Wednesday. Not suprised by this. I actually thought Weds wold pull a win off.
Fulham 1 - 1 Bristol Rover. Great result for Rovers.
