Thoughts on night footy at Glenelg?

My opinion - you little ******* ripper! Night footy right next to the best suburban night spot in Adelaide. With Glenelg in form I reckon 10,000+ crowds would be on the cards!

Night games would be good but they would have to be played very early or late in the season. I would imagine conditions at the Bay would be a bit wild and wooly on a cold winter's evening.

Great idea. I love night footy and would love to watch it at any ground, from any club, that is willing to take a chance on it. Bays should be supported wholeheartedly with it.

I love the idea but still prefer Saturday arvo footy best. But get rid of the Sunday games for Sat Night. A good crowd with say Norf or Port as opposition.

To suvive amongst AFL saturation scheduling flexibility is a must.

ALL clubs should investigate night footy.

If you consider a 6.30pm game (as at Elizabeth) finishes at approx 9.00pm even residential based ovals should have local issues minimised.

For all those who say Night footy in winter does not work it doesn't seem to stop big crowds at the Crows.

Yes it would certainly work at Glenelg

Some think I'm a bit warped but I also think it would work at Noarlunga for the same reasons as why it should work at Hamra Homes.
ie - different time slot to local football leagues
- lack of local entertainment options within the region

They have already upgraded to be able to play summer twilight matches, if night footy at Central works a further upgrade cant be too far away.

That leaves
- Alberton
- Prospect
- Woodville
- Unley
- Richmond

Unley is the only one that I wouldn't like there chances of getting good Light towers put up and being allowed to play Night Footy. They had enough trouble with the council even allowing them to play there.

If Friday night sucks for shift works, wouldn't Saturday night also suck?

westies are atill looking into lights for Richmond/Broadspectrum. I feel Night footy at most venues will be the go give up the sunday games and have friday nights, Saturday afternoons and Saturday night games. If the SANFL is serious about boosting crowd numbers this will be a top idea.

The idea of night games at Richmond doesn't really do it for me. What is there to do around the ground at night, have a pie at the 24 hour vili's joint?

The only thing going against night football on a regular basis at any oval is the cold and wet in the middle of winter plus those families with young kids who prefer a Sat/Sun afternoon game. Personally I still prefer the Sat. arvo games and I find the standard is generally higher - certainly better given the weather conditions for over head marking and longer kicking as even with no rain the winter night games become affected by the "dewy" conditions.

Night games at Glenelg would be good. MUCH rather go there on a Saturday night than Elizabeth Oval.

Most of the first say 7 or 8 rounds should be where night games are scheduled, then a few over the winter months, followed by a few more at the last few rounds. Night footy is a great idea, but it would be best if say between rounds 8 and 20 there weren't as many.

I agree with your comments with regard to night matches in the opening rounds.

However, I don't think there should be a strict format for night fixtures, ie 2 night games per round. Rather, night games should be used primarily to maximise variety in the fixture, and maximise opportunities to avoid clashes with other SANFL and local AFL fixtures.

Generally speaking, i'd like there to be on average 3 matches per round played at a different times on the weekend, preferably 4, to enable general SANFL followers such as myself to attend as many games as possible.

I'd be able, and quite willing, to attend all round matches if they were fixtured something like this:

Friday night @ Glenelg
Glenelg V Norwood

Saturday afternoon @ Adelaide Oval
Eagles V Central

Saturday night @ Adelaide Oval
Port V Sturt

Sunday afternoon @ Prospect
North V West
