There's the thing, certain words said one way can mean so much when heard and misconstrued.

I am reading the book "Kokoda" about WW2 and the chapter I am up to is called Choco's.
Choco refers to the militant blokes who served in Papua, who hadn't had any service training etc, and the army proper
referred them as Choco's in reference to a uneaten chocolate bar. Gift wrapped, soft and never seen action....
Choco nowadays refers to someone with dark skin...

I went to school with a predominant Greek population. They used to call me Dog or dogger. I'd retaliate with the
old Wog or wogger !! Used to make 'em mad !! Dog was skin of a duck's back for me, but my retaliation used to
fire 'em up. Told 'em don't call me Dog and I won't mention Wog !

As far as I am concerned, its easier to hate everybody, then you can't be accused of
being a racist. :finga:

I think it comes down to the intent of use. Like in Punky's example, within the team it shows how tight the group is that they can call each other by these terms and no offence is taken, just the same as calling each other ahssoles, or blouses or whatever. This sort of talk usually strengthens the bonds inside a group as long as everyone is in on the spirit intended. But when members of the opposite team begin using the same language, usually it is an attempt at derision so obviously the intent and the reaction are not the same.

It also comes down to the experiences of the individual on the receiving end. Imagine if somebody had been beaten while repeatedly called blackie, then the next time he hears that word, even delivered in a friendly way, he's going to remember that experience. This would also apply to lesser, or greater forms of abuse experienced while having a key word repeated and reinforced in the subconscious. Minority groups that have suffered purely as a result of their colour or creed would have different experiences to those in the majority.

This is why sometimes calling somebody Black could be considered racist but calling somebody White usually is not.

You can't go past the example of Bert Newton talking of Mohammed Ali on the Logie's using his trademark line "I like the boy!"

You could hear the audience sucking in it's collective breath.

ps. I am not a racist; I hate everybody. Especially Victorians between February and October.

Just because it happened in the old days doesn't mean it was ok.

Maybe the politcal bullshit can end when racism ends?

Only the Yanks who were in the audience.
I'd say the rest of the crowd had no idea about the 'boy' reference.
(FWIW,Slave owners used it when they giving orders and/or beating their slaves.)
