Gilly's Stump-Mike Protest

Postby Magpiespower » Thu Apr 20, 2006 8:36 am

Anybody see Media Watch last night?

Apparently TV stations are supposed to turn their microphones down after each delivery. But they've been them at full volume to pick up on the Aussies sledging.

This has got the Aussies back up so they decided as a team to get their own back. On quite a few occasions, Gilly can be heard pumping up his team-mates with lines like:

'Come on - let's do this for the boys at Travelex.'
'Dig deep for Caltex.'

There were a few more as well, all sponsors of the Australian cricket team.

But not sponsors of the networks covering the cricket! The free plugs haven't gone down too well with the TV stations according to Monica Attard.

Sure beats the monotonous 'Bowled Shane' cry!

I've heard about Gilly saying stuff, I spose they have to keep it up for sledging of both teams playing.

That is gold.

GOLD.

I heard the Aussies were upset about it in the last test in RSA I think? The stump mic is supposed to be turned OFF between deliveries but it was left on and they were upset. Or maybe that was the first test in Bangladesh.

It would be great if it was left on I would love to hear the sledging as in my opinion it is part of the game, I love being sledged when I bat and I love standing at first slip telling the batsman how poorly he is going!!!! However I am sure it is in crickets best interest to not have the mikes on.
Good work by Gilly though!

The best sledging I have ever heard was in a test between Sth Africa and Sri Lanka a few years back. Sangakara was in the batsmans ear after every ball and Ashwell Prince really wasn't taking it well. Sanga kept referring to Prince being about to become the scapegoat for a South African loss if he got out, that he would get the full blame and not get picked again. Prince didn't last too long. Tried something similar with Pollock, but didn't work, Sth Africa won and Sanga and Pollock had a few words in the middle of the pitch, with the stump mics left on.

Absolute gold!

I recall a Test Match in England in Australia's 1993 tour. Apparently some media group planted sensitive microphones around the ground to catch the Aussies sledging. The players never knew about it at the time. The media group who were hoping to run an expose on the big bad nasty Australians ended up with egg on their face because they didn't pick up any "over the top" comments by the Australians, but the worst sledging came from the English players. I remember Neville Oliver being very annoyed by the media intrusion, but I thought it was hilarious. There are still some people out there who honestly believe only the Australians sledge.

Gilly could get em all in one sentence

"He Warney, did you sneak into the petrol station on the way to the ground to get the Castrol motor oil for the team bus, on the way to the Travelex cash machine to get the cash you borrowed off Simmo last night at the Cas, while getting a dozen Milo bars for Binger, which he'll wash down with the gatorade??"

Hope he does - then they might turn the effing mikes down and stop invading their privacy.
