this odi series is a waste of time, a possible 3 wash outs in the first 3 games. We are going to be left with each side playing each other once, maybe not even that.

South Africa can jump above us if we don't make the final, we might even need to win the thing to stay top. It's a load of shit considering we have dominated for so long while South Africa continue to choke.

Australia 3/140

32 overs

Gilly 61 LBW to a ball that pitched well outside off to a delivery bowled from wide around the wicket.

Does the ball have to PITCH in line with the stumps or HIT in line with the stumps?
My understanding is that you can't (shouldn't) be given out LBW playing a shot to a ball that PITCHES outside the line.

good win, i thought the game had a good atmosphere although Australia won easily. The crowd was pretty good and the commentators didn't get too excited, at least when i was watching.

Thanks redden whites:
Here's what I found.

The essence of the rule might be concisely stated as:
If the ball hits the batsman (but not his bat, or a hand holding the bat, first) when it was otherwise going to hit the wicket, then it is judged out LBW, unless:

(1) the ball pitched (bounced) on the leg side or
(2) the ball hit the batsman outside the off stump and the umpire adjudged that the batsman was genuinely attempting to play the ball.

The ball must hit in line : The ball must hit the batsman in the region directly between the two wickets. An important exception is that, if the impact is outside the off stump, the batsman can be out LBW if he does not make a genuine attempt to play the ball (that is, if he does not "play a stroke"). If the impact is between wicket and wicket, the playing of a stroke is irrelevant.

Exactly.Where it pitches(as understood by you to be vital in your previous post) before hitting in line is irrelevant ,with regard to outside the off stump

I have, I'm sorry :(
I knew what I was getting at, just got my "pitched and hit" muddled up.
The rule I was referring to was obviously an older one and I should've been more careful in reading what I pasted above.
