all teachers do this - do they?? bit of a generalisation I'd say..... and it's not just teachers who are required to take work home... 8)

sorry back on topic

Lunchcutter, I average 30 hours a week in the classroom, 30 hours a week preparing work, 20 hours a week marking and 10 hours a week officiating with sport for the school. That makes on average a 90 hour week. Yes, it is the same for most teachers. Cheers

Absolute rot.

Well BDP did agree that he was incorrect in this statement.

And as for teachers, some are great, some are average, and some should be forced to find a new career. Preferably by tomorrow.

Like any other profession.

Especially when their absolute laziness and outspoken contempt for being a teacher anymore directly impacts on myself and more importantly my family.

Play on, i've had my say.

Grow up and let it go, Andy! You really are being petty.

I have made most of my money from property dealings, not Medicine, as did my sister, who didn't even go to University, and I am about to quit Medicine entirely because it just does not pay as well as I can do elsewhere.

To answer you, yes, we did have a Range Rover and a Porsche simultaneously for a while - around 1984 to 1987, when I sold the Porsche, but my wife kept the Range Rover I'd bought for her to replace her old Mini-van until 1996, when I sold the farm and bought her a Musso she still has. We also had a Suzuki Ute, and later a Toyota tray top. One of my lawyer friend's, who bred Simmentaler nearby, had a Toyota tray top too because you can't tote hay in a Lexus either. He and I both did the farm work ourselves and were seriously trying to make it pay, not swanning around with hired help to do it all.

Ral Rainsford, who ran Chateau Moteur, did offer to make me a Porsche Ute if I really wanted one though, while we were chatting, over a glass of Chardonnay if I recall correctly - neither of us were serious.

"Rich Doctor"?? Your average doctor charges about $220 per hour. Law firms charge $450 per hour for the principals and $350 per hour for a junior.
Do I understand correctly from your posts that Law is your field?

Sorry mate, I was on the verge of growing up, but the reponse you gave just encouraged me to be more childish.

I'm a law student, just some electives left, so if you want me to do some legal work for you I'll give you mates rates of $300p/h.

Most lawyers are on salaries and only a few make the big money. As a doctor I would have thought there is more chance of being at the top of the tree in a practice rather than being one of a thousand solicitors in the big firms. My missus' step dad is a country GP and I think would be better off than most lawyers, although he probably has made a shitload off property and shares like yourself.

People who study law do so to provide a fundamental social service. Med students just take it up through self importance and greed.

I'm joking please don't take this seriously

Rushby, I never said that the majority of teachers work 90 hours a week by the way. I said that the majority of teachers whom I know. I think that teachers in all systems work pretty darn hard (public, private, primary, secondary). I am probably exaggerating in saying 90 hours a week on average. However, those are the hours I have worked so far this term but that comes with looking after the First XI (10 hours a week commitment), learning the South Australian curriculum again (having just come back from Mildura) and starting at a rather academic school where I want to make a good impression. I would be very surprised if any dedicated teacher got by on less than 50-60 hours a week.

Unfortunatly our oval isnt in the council i work for...

If it was on the other hand, it would be the best carpark in all of adelaide ;)

Charles Sturt Council have a long way to go before their idea of oval maintenance is anywhere near acceptable IMO

Andy, please be aware that some, if not most, medical students are not in it for the money. My lady friend, Sheree, ran a very successful physiotherapy practice for many years before deciding to go into medicine a few years ago. She has had to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost earnings to do this. Additionally, even when she graduates as a doctor at the end of this year she will be on a very meagre salary compared to what she was earning in her own physiotherapy practice. She has gone into medicine so that she can treat the whole person. There are several in the course studying with her who were previously lawyers. They have also gone into medicine out of a desire to serve mankind. Some are very disillusioned with the legal system and the fact that how the law treats you is more to do with how much money you have rather than what you have suffered (in many cases). Not putting the legal profession down, just letting you know that many see medicine as far more beneficial for serving mankind than law.

Sounds like you've had bad experiences with teachers, hence some of your comments.

There are teachers who I don't feel do their job as well as they can (for various reasons), but unfortunately that happens in any job.

Having 2 children who go to a public school I can back up BDPs and Mics comments.
Mind you we are lucky where we are and could shop around for the best school and couldnt be happier, the teachers at our school are definately underpaid.
We're also lucky we have 2 very bright kids who are well behaved.
Id assume all schools are diferent. My Year 9 maths teacher at Mitchell Pk is in jail for killing a kid after abusing him!

My wife is a public school teacher and believe me, she puts in the hard yards.
Just because school finishes at 3.15 doesn't mean the teachers do.

Isn't that the same with most professions though? I don't stop work at 5, although my employer stops paying me (and the clock keeps on ticking for the client as well).

Teachers do great work, and many do extra work but the implication of BDP's that most teachers work 90 hour weeks is, as Rushby said, absolute rot.

Not saying your experiences aren't valid BDP, but you do work at one of the states top schools where things are entirely different to other areas around the state where they don't have much extra-curricular activity because the teachers can be seen rushing to their cars at 3.30 (don't get me started on the parents though, too many are prepared to let others do the work for their little johnny or jenny, then complain if things aren't up to their lofty standard).

I wish the teachers at our school did leave at 3.30 as that way I could get a park when my kids have sports training.
Most still there at 5 and quite a few there when we drop the kids off at OSH at 7.10am.
They do more work in a day than I do a fortnight!

Smac, I work at a Catholic College, definitely not one of the highflying expensive schools. I honestly believe that the average teacher would put in at least a 50-60 hour week. As for 90 hours a week, I did say that that was most teachers whom I know. 90 may be a slight exaggeration but I would certainly say 70 plus (including co-curricular activities).
