Of course mate, I reckon my back lawn would go up in 20 seconds with a stray cigarette butt, what could happen in the hills/national parks isn't worth thinking about.

Drove through there a couple of weeks ago, and the amount of houses with leaves in gutters, tall dry grass etc etc was astonishing...

When there is a fire (not if) those idiots will be the first to cry out for help...FFS get your place tide, clean the gutters, cut the grass etc etc.

I know when we lived in the foothills (Panorama), we made sure every fire season we had the place tidy and clean, hoses ready, rainwater tank set etc etc...

If we got a fire as Canberra did a couple of years ago, all the suburbs backing onto the foothills like Rostrevor, Athelstone, Burnside, Panorama, Clpaham etc will be in real strife...
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Dunno about that as I almost ran one over today when he was out and about.

I know the good spots 8)

I keep records, this summer Im ahead over $300- in parking fees saved....sure you get pinged occasionally but its only $19- and the all day parking costs $11-, get hit once every 2 days and your ahead....in hot weather you get sone about once in every 5 days.....

I run with the same theory, although use the side streets next to the office. Good chance to clear the head and move the car if the inspectors have marked the tires. Have 3 tickets since December 06 when we moved the office here... At $19 each I've paid $57 for 16 months parking so far - cheapest permanent spot I have found was $88 per month, would have cost me $1,408 to park there.

our little secret Smac!

Stupid thing is sometimes I park in a 15 min zone for 9 hours!

Ok I live in a land that really doesn't know the meaning of the word 'drought', regardless of what our popular press might think. I'm a bit curious....if, as I believe, you guys in SA have a chronic water shortage why are you still throwing water into swimming pools etc (not having a go at Dog_ger or anyone else) or are they classed as some sort of emergency supply for fire fighting (that's not sarcasm either...they were classed as that when I was on Ascension Is).

It depends where you live, you actually need a permit to fill up pools and youré supposed to keep pool covers on to avoid precipitation.

In Victoria (and someone correct me if Im wrong) if you're lucky enough to get the permit, you can only fill your pool with buckets  in rural areas you may need water brought in by truck which costs an absolute shiteload.

Thanks FC....just seems a little crazy...would have thought that 'recreational use' would be the first thing to get banned as a water saving measure regardless of whether someone can afford to pay extra for the privillage. Or is the drought not as bad as I thought...maybe I should stop relying on KG and Thingy for my Aussie news

The heatwave has arrived in Melbourne.
Yesterday - 34
Today - 38
Tomorrow - 40
Saturday - 30(whew!)
Sun,Mon Tues & Wed 36 +.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

I can't ever recall an overnight temp so high..

Dunno about expected but I can remember at least one night in the past when it didnt drop below 30.
I think the record is something like 33.5.
I might move to Victor as its only 28 there today, amazing what an hours drive can do temperature wise.

Nights over 30 degrees have occured in four months - January, February, November and December; March record is 29.5, in 1985. That 33.5 was in 1982, there was also 33.2 in January 1939 - a few days later the still record max of 46.1 occured. I think in 2006 there was a 33.1 in January, also I noticed in the records there was a 32 odd degree record for December in 1899 as well.

I remember the heat waves in the early eighties.
People sleeping on their front lawns, sleeping with every door and window gaping wide open to let in the often non-existant breeze, families hitting the Vic Square fountain, night swimming down at the beach etc.
If people tried half those things nowdays there'd be a crime wave to match the heat wave methinks.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
