State Squad Announced

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Eichner going so well he was on the bench for most of the South game??? Lindsay not in the squad - WTF??? He and O'Hara should back up for the second year as the State 1-2 in the ruck. Personally I couldn't care less if no North players were picked in the squad as you always run the risk of injury in a mid-season game that counts only for bragging rights as to the next best league in the nation and even that is debatable when we loose to the Vics or WA.

Sorry if I sound bitter and cynical but the most celebrated State game injury of all time cut down Robran in his prime and certainly cost him the 74 MM and probably another 2 on top of that. :(

Would it have been any more tolerable if Robran had suffered his injury playing for the Roosters?

Eichner definately deserves his spot in the team.

Eichner has been playing well across half back for the Magpies since the middle to later part of 2005.He was one of Port's best against West in round one, probably BOG for the first half against Centrals two weeks ago,and due to match ups,(Lokan went back on Cupido) and the return of Wanganeen and Waterhouse started on the bench against South.Might I add very unlucky in doing so,but played well with limited opportunity in that game.

Jimmy,he is 6' 2-3" runs hard and fast off half back and kicks well.

Well the guy who did the match review re Port vs. South on this site differs from your view of Eichners game last week and I tend to agree with him from what I could see from my lounge room. Still I haven't seen enough of him yet to make an informed judgement.

Eichners a great player to watch. Attacks the ball hard, is a great defender and really backs himself to beat his opponent to the ball when on a lead. Any forward who has him standing him better be prepared to work his ass off all day or Eichs will run off him and carry the ball into the forward lines.

As I said, played well with limited opportunity, and when he did get on he was placed in unfamiliar surroundings for some reason,in the forward line.As PAFC said, backs himself and runs hard.

Ill have a crack at picking a final team based on the squad:

F: Brant Chambers, Ben Warren, Stephen Kenna
HF: Scott Borlace, Nick Gill, Tim Inkster
C: Jade Sheedy, Darryl Wintle (Capt), Brett Backwell
HB: Paul Thomas (V-Capt), Corey AhChee, Adam Fisher
B: Mark McKenzie, Paul Sherwood, Luke Ivens

R: Daniel Kirk, James Gowans, Jeremy Clayton

Int: Brett O'Hara, Bryce Campbell, Chris Gowans, Mark Clayton

Is it 22 who play?

I found the wingers & half-back flankers the hardest to pick? Start J or C Gowans - take your pick but both need to be in the 22? There are a few players Ive been forced to pick due to lack of an alternative (Schell or Passador for Chambers and/or Warren, Lindsay for OHara. Surely there is a better tallish utility than M Clayton to come off the bench and play either end but none included in squad). Whiteman, Powell and Gallagher are unlucky. Eichner, Parry and Howard shouldnt even be in the squad.

Any reason why? Port and North people both say Eichner and Howard are playing excellent footy.

Simply not enough talent for the level. I might go through the teams more thoroughly and suggest my alternatives. Off the top of my head though definitely Lindsay for Parry. And probbaly need one or two more bigger versatile talented blokes rather than Eichner - who is only proven in the backlines and cant play key-posi, and Howard - who is too much like Gowans, Powell, Whiteman, Thomas (inside players) but less ability and undisciplined. Why not throw a bit more youth & pace in there - a Campbell or that little bloke from South - give them some experience in the squad with a view to the future.

I know Schell has been injured and hasn't played much, but would't you have his name pencilled in and see how he goes over the next few weeks?

Eichner has been in great form this year. Yes I said he had a poor game on the weekend. Due to matchups, he was played across half forward for a half...a position he hasnt played for about 3 years.

He was outstanding in the first two weeks. Definately deserving of a spot.

Tough for any of us to judge the form of some one we have not seen play this year, lets keep that in mind before we go and say some players are not deserving of their sopt in the squad.

Based on current form, I would have Passadore in the squad.
We used to be good :-(
