Eating Red Meat on Good Friday

More importantly why can't we get hot cross buns all year round? Absolutely ridiculous, we should be able to have them whenever we want if the market dictates it.
Another year when I'll have to fill up the freezer with 6 months supplies, mind you it ties in nicely with me defrosting the red meat for the BBQ which will make some extra room.

Hondo, it has always been part of the Catholic tradition not to eat meat on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. In fact, until recently it was tradition not to eat meat on any Friday. One thing has always puzzled me - why we can eat fish but not meat. Was it because some of the apostles were fishermen and a deal was done??

some stores sell both BUT not all

On past occasions I have eaten red meat on Good Friday.

Its getting lesser significance each year. Maccas,KFC and Hungrys dont open because no one buys anything.....I know it's a small sacrifice but if you or me died under the same circumstances (By no way am I comparing myself to jesus ) the last thing i would want is for others to go without any day of the year. Not to mention that I also beleive all the worlds major wars are started by religion,but thats another story (Yes I know im going to hell)

The bloody leg of lamb didn't defrost in time for tonights Roast , so we had fish as it defrosted easily...

Had a ham on my sandwich today but...

Roast tomorrow, then BBQ Sunday at in-laws, followed by Roast for tea at Parents, then Maccas for a
cheeseburger fix Monday for a kids Birthday...

By the way, do not get too caught up with the rule of not eating meat on Good Friday. Today, people of faith are encouraged to do other works. We may each personally decide what we wish to do, as long as we do something that is a sacrifice. This is to remember the ultimate sacrifice which Jesus performed to free us from our sins. Giving up sport on Good Friday could be one personal sacrifice!


The Code of Canon Law and our bishops remind us of other works and means of doing penance: prayer, acts of self-denial, almsgiving and works of personal charity. Attending Mass daily or several times a week, praying the rosary, making the way of the cross, attending the parish evening prayer service, teaching the illiterate to read, reading to the blind, helping at a soup kitchen, visiting the sick and shut-ins and giving an overworked mother a break by baby-sitting—all of these can be even more meaningful and demanding than simply abstaining from meat on Friday.

Personally, I believe more in doing things for other people. Hence, my helping out at night shelters and visiting nursing homes.
