I believe a current day rockband were named after him as his full name (and this is a ripper) is:
Franz Ferdinand Karl Giuermo Anikò Strezpek Belschwitz Mòric Pinche Bálint Szilveszter Gömpi Maurice Bzoch János Frajkor Ludwig van Haverbeke Josef von Habsburg-Lothringen

PS He was religious.

Very Good! 8)

WW1 saw the deaths of over 40 Million people and countless numbers of people injured. So the next question is why was Archduke Ferdinand Assasinated and why did his assastination result then in such a large scale war?

The point that I am driving at is that his assasination is often given as the reason for the war, yet the actual answer reason for the war is somewhat different and especially in todays times should be more widely taught in our school system.

So anyone care to have a go?

Didn't the Serbs then have an issue with the Austrians, a couple of countries took sides and it just esculated?

Perhaps the shorter answer is that Germany and Russia were looking for an excuse to go to war with one another and so by involving themselves in the affairs of other countries found a good enough reason to go and get it on.

Once it started countries who were allies of either Germany or Russia took sides, some motivated by sheer hatred for another nation, others out of fear that if they didnt choose a side they would be attacked and taken over by one of the snowballing armies from one of each sides of the conflict.

It was a commonly held view that the war would only last for six months or so, yet because of the sheer number of nations involved and multiple fronts of battle it went on for several years.

WW1 never really ended is the view of many people and was recommenced in 1939 albeit with different alliances.

It is also interesting to note that many people have a view that if WW1 had never occured we may well have made significantly more medical discoveries and be a more technologically advanced society as many brilliant minds were killed in the war and various programmes being advanced were suspended in favour of weapons technology.

Anyway it is an interesting thing to reflect on and something that should be given more depth in our school system in relation to Australian History!

Yes the Duke guy was assasinated so that they could all go to war.
Similar thing happened between Korea and Japan. The Japanese had some Korean Prince knocked off and made it look like some other faction did the deed. The Japanese army then "liberated" the Koreans from the ensuing troubled times. Then on to Manchu, China proper and Pear Harbour, until they finally met their match on the Kokoda trail, and it was all downhill from there.

Interesting you've made mention that the WW1 held up scientific and medical advancement, as there are many people that also claim that WW1 and WW2 caused aircraft technology to leap forward. I have also heard it mentioned wars escalate manufacturing, and basically caused blood banks to be invented ( I think that was in WW1). As horrible as wars are they have contributed to some advancement. Whether that advancement was cancelled out by the obvious decline in manpower and loss of brilliant minds is a good question.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Yes, some older German immigrants, post WWII, I have met said they really had no choice but go to war again, because of the massive inflation in Germany caused by the huge reparations demanded by the French after WWI. I have a 10 Billionen Deutschmark postage stamp that has been over-stamped with the Swastika and "10 Neumark" - a 1 billion reduction in nominal value.

A contrary argument re the scientific development is that the war effort stimulated much scientific development in aircraft, radar, and other things which had spin-off effects. I'd tend to expect those with brilliant minds may have found a way to avoid going to the front, by getting themselves good laboratory jobs back home.

English cricket, however, may have never recovered from the loss!

Interestingly Hitler and Stalin who caused WW2 were both Athiests, so does that then suggest that Athiesm causes wars in the same way that relgion is supposed to cause wars?

Ba-Boww. Stalin was a Communist, they are only atheists because the Party tells them to be... religion would take away from the power of the Party. Besides which, Communism seems to be some kind of weird cult anyway, not atheists like myself who prefer science and reason to hyperbole (see ya, commies!) and faith (sorry).

As for Hitler... Germany has been a Christian country for centuries and that probably didn't change when the Nazis were running the place - why else did they go after the Jews? They though it was the Christian thing to do... apparently :?
Are you gonna eat that?
