Very Good!![]()
WW1 saw the deaths of over 40 Million people and countless numbers of people injured. So the next question is why was Archduke Ferdinand Assasinated and why did his assastination result then in such a large scale war?
The point that I am driving at is that his assasination is often given as the reason for the war, yet the actual answer reason for the war is somewhat different and especially in todays times should be more widely taught in our school system.
So anyone care to have a go?

Perhaps the shorter answer is that Germany and Russia were looking for an excuse to go to war with one another and so by involving themselves in the affairs of other countries found a good enough reason to go and get it on.
Once it started countries who were allies of either Germany or Russia took sides, some motivated by sheer hatred for another nation, others out of fear that if they didnt choose a side they would be attacked and taken over by one of the snowballing armies from one of each sides of the conflict.
It was a commonly held view that the war would only last for six months or so, yet because of the sheer number of nations involved and multiple fronts of battle it went on for several years.
WW1 never really ended is the view of many people and was recommenced in 1939 albeit with different alliances.
It is also interesting to note that many people have a view that if WW1 had never occured we may well have made significantly more medical discoveries and be a more technologically advanced society as many brilliant minds were killed in the war and various programmes being advanced were suspended in favour of weapons technology.
Anyway it is an interesting thing to reflect on and something that should be given more depth in our school system in relation to Australian History!

Interestingly Hitler and Stalin who caused WW2 were both Athiests, so does that then suggest that Athiesm causes wars in the same way that relgion is supposed to cause wars?
