Central v Centrals

Postby Wedgie » Sat Apr 29, 2006 9:13 pm

I've found a few Central/s fans have a go at supporters from other clubs for calling their club Centrals as they claim it is not Centrals, it is in fact Central as it is short for Central District.
I wonder if those Central/s fans would like to apologise to other fans who have over the years described their club as Centrals as on Tuesday I noticed many Central/s fans wearing official club hats that clearly stated CENTRALS on the back of them.
Only a minor issue I know but some Central/s fan's always brought it up and quite frankly they have egg on their face now and one I had a giggle over remember the issue they kept bringing up after seeing these caps on Tuesday.
Perhaps they should be discussing the issue with their own club before having a go at fans of other clubs?

lol, 50% of North fans would disagree about my "inciteful"ness in recent times, I've been copping more of a pasting in recent times from North supporters on The Roost over Josh Francou than supporters of other clubs in any other issues, mind you, keeping the posts on footysa to a minimum helps if you don't want to cop childish abuse too! lol

I thought it was Central Districts , hence why we all shorten it to Centrals.

So working on that logic (assuming the "s" in Centrals is from the last letter of districts) North Adelaide should be shortened to "Northe". Hmm....that will work!

"Go you Northeee's"

I don't find it an issue but I just find it funny that some Central/s fans did make a big issue of it at times only to have their own club turn on them.
Hence the post.

Its a bit like the former Port player who played for geelong seconds mainly and calls sunday games on 9, who keeps calling Woodville west torrens as woodville torrens.

But I like the idea your stirring up the mob from way out north keep it up Wedgie :D  theyllleave the eagles alone then

I call the Eagles "Woodville-Torrens' because
1/ I can't stand clubs being referred to as their emblems,eg the Bulldogs (Western & Canterbury),Kangaroos,
Sydney Roosters,West Coast Eagles(very rarely West Coast) etc..
2/ West Torrens were referred to as "Torrens" by a fair amount of people.
Woodville-Torrens is less of a mouthful as Woodville-West Torrens.

Surely there are other things to whine about, it's obviously a shortened version of Central Districts for convenience. No-one says Centrals Districts do they? Please dont come back with a "BigFooty"esque crack about fishing, its so obviously a cop out.

I'm sure it comes down to very basic english. "Central's" would be the most correct way to print the name, but when you talk, you don't "speak" the apostrophe!

A mate of mine played league footy for Central District back in the 1970s, and he used to tell people it is Central, not Centrals. So I've been calling them Central ever since.

I didn't think that you used apostrophes for possessive pronouns or for noun plurals?
