The Promotion Race....Championship, League 1 & 2 + Demotion

Postby Dirko » Wed Apr 02, 2008 11:25 am

Thought as JTC has started a thread about the other two teams to be relegated from the EPL (Derby :( ), I'd start one about the race to win a spot in the EPL, and who's going down etc etc...

There's roughly a month of football left so here goes...

The Championship. Top TWO go through to EPL, 3rd to 6th in the playoffs, bottom 3 relegated to League 1
Bristol City sitting top on 70
Stoke City second on 69.
Hull, WBA, Watford & Wolves in the playoff spots.
Only 4 points seperates 5th from second and a further 5 points from 12th to a playoff spot !!

Southhampton, S.c.u.nthorpe & Colchester sitting in the firing line !! Incredibly there are five teams within 5 points of relegation !!
Most of the teams midtable are equal distance from a playoff berth or getting relegated ! Will be some nervous clubs around the next month.

League 1 Top TWO go through to the Championship, 3rd to 6th in the playoffs, bottom 4 relegated to League 2
Swansea sitting pretty on top with 82 points
Carlisle second on 75
Doncaster, Nottm Forrest  , Southend & Tranmere in the playoff race.
Gillingham,Bournemouth,Luton Town & Port Vale in the drop zone. ATM Luton & Ports looking the goods for League 2

League 2 Top THREE go through to League 1, 4th to 7th in the playoffs, bottom 2 relegated to where ever the hail from !!
Peterborough, MK Dons & Darlington sitting 1,2,3
Hereford, Stockport, Wycombe & Rochdale in the playoff race

Mansfield Town & Wrexham in the spots to go back to whence they came !!

Will try to keep a tab on the race weekly !!

Swansea look like getting certain promotion unfortunately, but it will make for some cracking games with Cardiff next season.

Notably both Luton and Bournemouth are in the relegation spots because of points deducted under the "going into administration rule"

IMO this is a crazy rule. Take Rotherham who also fill a relegation spot fro the same reason. Now if a club needs a bit of a lift in it's time of financial need, the FA in their infinate wisdom dock that club 10 points and in this case almost certainly seal their fate of relegation to a lower league.

Lower league = Fewer Fans
Fewer Fans = Lower Gate Revenue
Lower Gate Revenue = Worsening Financial Situation
Worsening Financial Situation = Fewer interested potential investors
Fewer interested potenitial investors = Greater chance of club folding

Now then FA, is there anything in the abovethat you don't quite understand

Weird...Leeds would be top two also if it didn't have the points deduction.

Sort of like kick you while you are down sort of method...

JTC, whatever happened to Wimbledon ? Are the plying their trade somewhere
or IIRC they folded ?

Nah mate, they got relegated from EPL, then CCC. They had been sharing Selhurst Park with the Eagles and were touting around for another ground as they only had a fan base of about 2,000 and no chance of increasing that.

They talked about moving to Dublin at one time but when that fell through they set up shop in milton Keynes. A couple of years back they changed their name to the MK Dons and the rest is history.

They played in the national hockey stadium for a couple of years but noe IIRC they have their own staduim and a growing fan base in big catchment area. Last week they won the Johnsons Paint Trophy (the old Shepa Van Trophy) which is a competition fro the 3rd and 4th divisions (League 1 and 2 as it is now), at Wembley in front 50 odd thousand fans beating Grimsby 2 - 0.

The Johnsons Paint Trophy is based on a North, South knock out comp played over two legs. The Northern winning finalists play the Southern winning finalists at Wembley.

Points of interst:
Paul ince is the manager of MK Dons (Used to be a star at Man U and did a pertty decent job in his 1st managerial role at Macclesfield. Kept them up even though they were about 10 points adrift when he took over.

MK Dons are current top of League 2 and an odds on to win the title and promotion.

Last week MK Dons returned all their old trophy's to Wimbledon as a mark of their new individuality. I'm not sure if this includes their FA Cup winners medals or not.

In the meantime, as a mark of protest the original Wimbledon fans, very disgruntled at wht the old club was doing (ie trying to move out of London), abandoned the club and started a fresh with a new team Wimbledon AFC, which plies it's trade on the lower amatuer leagues. They won promotio last year and are only 2 divisions away from League 2

Speaking of fans protests, did you know that a bunch of Man U fans, angry at the take over by the glazier family, started their own club called United FC. They play in a local league (I watched them play Padiham last year). Such is the ill feeling towards the Glaziers, like Wimbledon AFC, United FC have been very successful and won two promotions. They play their home games at league side Bury FC and get an average of 5 - 6,000 fans, which is about 2,000 more then the Gigg Lane outfit get themselves. 6,000 is a huge number of fans when you consider how far down the pyramid system they play and average gates at that level are around 200 - 400.

Shows how amazing the relegation/promotion system is too - if they stay functioning, in 20 or 30 years they could be right up amongst it in the top flights.

The fans of the old Wimbledon founded a new club once the Dons moved to MK called AFC Wimbledon. AFC Wimbledon now play in the Rymans League or something like that. Get by far the biggest crowds at that level. Think they now own Kingstonian FC's old ground. Hopefully they'll be back in the league eventually.

It wouldn't suprise me to see at least one of them playing league football in 3 to 4 years time DW. United FC would be favouorites on the basis that they have such a large fan base now and good financial backing. Fsr from waning, it is getting bigger with averages up around 1000 - 1500 per game last year from where they started.

Like I say, that's a hell of a lot of buying power in those leagues and it can't be too long before a rich benefactor turns up and lets face it Utd have plenty of those.

Thanks for the in depth reply John. Had a look on Wiki re MK Dons, and they have even returned all the trophy's they won to the Borough of Merton ! They apparently do not lay any claim to being the old Wimbledon now, that honour goes to the club you named A.F.C Wimbledon.

Also read that AFC hold the record for the longest run of unbeaten games at 78 ! Struth..not bad !!

What happened to Wimbledon was disgraceful, should never be allowed to happen again.

The same thing happened to Meadowbank Thistle FC in Scotland who were moved to Livingston against the wishes of their fans. The old Meadowbank fans now support Edinburgh City in the Scottish Non-Leagues.

Colchester 2 Ipswich 0
Colchester faced the drop if they were defeated at Layer Road, but a brace from Scott Vernon secured a comfortable three points.
Colchester took the lead on 29 minutes as Kevin Lisbie did well to hold up the ball before feeding Vernon, who coolly prodded past advancing goalkeeper Stephen Bywater.
The second half was then an end-to-end affair and it was Colchester who could have doubled their lead as Lisbie was again the architect, but Johnnie Jackson dragged his effort wide when unmarked in the penalty area.
However, Williams' side were not forced to wait long for their second as on 73 minutes Vernon netted as he latched onto a long ball and fired in left-footed from the edge of the box.

Norwich 2 Burnley 0 :(
Norwich dented Burnley's hopes for a place in the play-offs as they ran out comfortable winners at Carrow Road.
The Canaries wasted little time in taking the lead as veteran Dion Dublin, who is hanging up his boots at the end of the season, put the home side in front on two minutes.
And on the stroke of full-time Norwich substitute Ched Evans, on loan from Manchester City, showed neat footwork to finish after being set up by Darren Huckerby to secure the points.

Plymouth 1 Charlton 2
Ten-man Charlton edged out promotion rivals Plymouth at Home Park as they came from behind in a thrilling contest.
Charlton were hit by an early blow as goalkeeper Nicky Weaver was sent off after only three minutes, but the Addicks then managed to keep their hosts at bay for the first half.
Plymouth, though, made their numerical advantage count on the hour mark as Jermaine Easter met a header across goal from Gary Teale to sweep past debutant shot-stopper Robert Elliot.
However, Charlton were back in the contest five minutes later as Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick failed to claim a cross and Zhi Zheng headed across goal for Leroy Lita to nod an equaliser.
And the Addicks then stunned their hosts on 76 minutes as in-form Lita, who has now scored three goals in two games, was in the right place to capitalise from another error by McCormick.

QPR 2 Preston 2
QPR produced a dramatic late comeback to stun Preston at Loftus Road.
Preston took the lead in the 37th minute as Neil Mellor hit his eighth league goal of the season and his third strike in two games.
And after the interval Tamas Priskin doubled Preston's lead as he hit the back of the net on 64 minutes.
However, QPR came storming back as Gareth Ainsworth (90) and Dexter Blackstock (93) struck to secure a point.

**** 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1
In the day's lunchtime kick-off, a second-half equaliser gave Sheffield Wednesday a much-needed point in their relegation scrap against **** at Glanford Park.
But both sides will feel disappointed not to have taken three points in what was billed as a must-win game.
A spectacular goal from Ian Morris after 18 minutes gave **** the lead, but a fortunate effort from Ben Sahar four minutes after half-time allowed Brian Laws' team to claim a point.

Sheffield United 3 Leicester 0
A James Beattie hat-trick inside the opening 19 minutes allowed United to cruise to victory against Leicester at Bramall Lane.
The game began in explosive fashion as Leicester defender Patrick Kisnorbo was handed his marching orders for bringing down Billy Sharp inside the 18-yard area as the striker was clean through on goal.
Referee Mike Pike was left with little option to dismiss last-man Kisnorbo after one of his assistants called the foul on 12 minutes.
Beattie, though, was not complaining as he fired in the rebound after goalkeeper Paul Henderson had saved his initial penalty.
And Beattie then doubled his tally on 14 minutes as he fired in a skidding 30-yard free-kick.
Beattie then ensured he would be taking the match ball home on 19 minutes as he prodded in from close range.

Southampton 2 Bristol City 0
Southampton boosted their hopes of survival as City failed to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Southampton deservedly took the lead on 35 minutes as Stern John spectacularly volleyed in after Jason Euell had headed on.
In a stop-start second half disrupted by a number of niggling injuries, City struggled to look capable of mustering an equaliser.
And it was the Saints who almost doubled their lead midway through the second half as City goalkeeper Adriano Bassu produced an excellent save to deny Mario Licka.
Southampton, though, then had a deserved second on 84 minutes as Euell poked in after Bassu had saved an initial Bradley Wright-Phillips effort.

Watford 2 Coventry 1
Watford ended their run of eight games without a win as they defeated Coventry at Vicarage Road.
The Hornets took the lead on seven minutes as Tommy Smith burst down the left and crossed for Nathan Ellington to fire in a crisp left-footed effort.
However, on 59 minutes Coventry were back in the game as lapse defending from Watford - who had drawn seven of their last eight games at kick-off - allowed Leon Best to head in.
The Hornets, though, were back in front with 11 minutes remaining as Coventry goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel misjudged a long ball to allow Smith to slot his side in front.

The relegation battle may well come down to goal difference. The Owls have the advantage of 1 point but a much better goal difference than both Soton or the Tykes. Barnsley have only achieved a single draw in their last 6 games and the FA cup in prpbably having an adverse effect on their league form. Tomorrows game in a no win for them IMO. If they win then the final awaits and will continue to affect their concentration, which was noticeable against the Clarets last week. They didn't go in hard at the tackle and that is probably for two reasons a) no one wants to risk yellow cards that might leave them suspened for the final, and b) no one wants to get injured and end up missing the final. Win tomorrow and I can't see anything changing until the end of the season. If the lose tomorrow, they can concentrate on the league but will be badly deflated to get so near but go down at the last hurdle. There might not be enough time to pick themselves up again.

Soton are capable of getting to safety IMO and should take advantage of Barnsley's predicament, especially after todays morale boosting 2 - 0 win over league leaders Bristol City and with Sheff Weds picking up points and a much superior goal difference, if could be curtains for the Tykes.

The U's and The Iron are down already IMO and I would put Barnsley to make up the third side.

As for promotion, well............

Firstly, I have to say that this is weakest season I have seen in the CCC. Bristol City are an average side that would lose 4 - 0 to Derby. Stoke have had a good run to get to second but they would also lose 4 - 0 to Derby. I fancy Hull City to get an automatic spot, they are on a great run and look a bllody strong, well organised side. They have made a couple of good pick ups, especially the boy striker on loan from Man U.
I also think WBA are still a good shout for the 2nd auto spot, they are out of the cup so now can concentrate on the league, have a good fan base at home and will come strong for the run in.
As for the play off lottery, Bristol C and Stoke should both hang on as should Watford. I think the 4th p,ace will go to either Wolves or Ipswich. The Tractor boys have been very impressive at home, but their away form has been poor and that might let them down. Wolves are just coming into a run of form again and it might just be the right time.

just to give you an idea of how weak the CCC is this year heer is my guess at resluts against Derby, just for a bit of fun

Bristol lose 4 - 0
Stoke lose 4 - 0
WBA draw
Hull draw
Wolves lose 3 - 0
Ipswich lose 4 - 0

Forget the FA Cup. Too many EPL teams are not focussed on the FA Cup anymore and filed junior or reserve teams. Techinally the reserves and juniors are more skillful but they don't cope well with the CCC hard at em style.

Put United in the ring with WBA next year and you could be looking at an 8 - 0 scoreline. Put Bristol City in the ring with Utd and you could be looking at and EPL record scoreling.

Struth !

So if Derby do as they say, and shore up the squad for a promotion push, then they should by your suggestions do it easily...
Hope they take the year if this is the case in the CCC to really prepare and strengthen the core of the group...

Good wrap on the CCC John.

LEAGUE 1
Swansea lost to Bournemouth 1 - 2....still top though on 82
Carlise won 2 - 1 over Yeovil town...still second on 78

Nott Forrest & Southend won, Doncaster drew...al stay in the hunt for a playoff place. Leeds play later.
No change in the teams for promotion/playoffs..

Bournemouth picked up valuable points but it may be too little too late. Still in relegation zone along with
Gillingham who drew with Milwall 1 all, Port Vale who beat Brighton 3 - 2 & Luton who lost to Northhampton 1 - 2.

LEAGUE 2
MK Dons won 2 - 1 over Lincoln, Peterborough drew 2 all with Wycombe, Darlington lost 1 nil to Stockport, Hereford move
into third after a 2 all draw with Chester City. MK Dons only a point off top, and them and Peterborough still look the goods
for a League 1 position.

Wrexham & Mansfield both drew. SO still in the drop zone....

Actually while we're talking promo/releg, how are Slough Town going in the minor leagues???
I've taken a little bit of interest in them since The Office. I'm hoping for a Slough Town v Swindon match up at some point.

Mate I work at Slough, catch a bus through 'that' roundabout and look out over that crappy office block from our crappy office block!

Anyhoo, Slough are USLESS. They're 2nd bottom in the local Berkshire league (whatever it's called). I don't think you can get relegated from that league.

What about the Clarets v Derby?

On the FA Cup, I'm embarressed to day that the Spurs sides put out were very close to full strength and we got touched right up by Utd.

It would be a sad day to see Utd beat say Bristol 12 or 13 nil. Surely that would make the dicks heading up the Premier League that the wealth from the TV deal needs to be distributed far more evenly.
