Australia A Side to play in July's Top End Tour

Postby blink » Thu May 04, 2006 1:45 pm

The Australian A side named to face other A teams from New Zealand, India & Pakistan in July:

Brad Haddin (C) NSW
Cullen Bailey SA
Travis Birt TAS
Mark Cosgrove SA
Dan Cullen SA
Brett Dorey WA
Ben Hilfenhaus TAS
Brad Hodge VIC
James Hopes QLD
Phil Jaques NSW
Mitchell Johnson QLD
Chris Rogers WA
Shaun Tait SA
Shane Watson QLD

Not a bad looking side that. I think it would beat most first Test sides from around the world, not just the A teams.

Young South Australian spin duo Dan Cullen and Cullen Bailey have also been included.

"Australia is obviously very well served at the moment with Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill, but Dan Cullen has shown us what he is capable of on the recent tour of Bangladesh and Cullen Bailey has had a very strong domestic season and deserves his opportunity," Hilditch said.

Stop Whinging everyone. Cameron White isnt playing because he is an absolute stinker of a bowler. The bloke is better off trying to concentrate on batting and pushing his way in. His 170 for Somerset last week was sensational.

It looks like an A side should, with lots of young players getting experience. It is heaps weaker than 10 years ago though, when the team was full of seasoned first class players. It will be interesting to see how Australia go in the next couple of years and beyond. I reckon we've been in a bit of a transition period since the Ashes, but will be even more so after the World Cup.

The difference to 10 years ago is, that they wouldnt be playing as many younger guys in the A team.
If the team was picked like it was 10 yrs ago it would include players like:
-Michael Divenuto
-Matthew Nicholson
-Matthew Elliott

Not saying these blokes arent good players, but the team was picked differently back then. Now they are willing to risk losing these types of games to give experience to the guys 20-25yrs old.

Cullen playing for Somerset, 43 overs, 10 maidens, 5 for 137. Also made 24* in the first innings, and 4* in the second. Doing alright for himself.
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

1870. Cullen indeed is a talent but his batting is dire. His technique is almost as bad as that Self Efrican with a gigantic beard (forget his name but the worst technique I've ever seen in an international player). Danny boy needs to work on this aspect of his game, especially if this subbing bull5hit is going to continue (hopefully it will not).

Hey REB, I thought that the ICC scrapped the super-sub rule? Is it still going on in county cricket? I would have thought they would have done away with it if the ICC had. If it is still going, I guess the poms running it aren't as smart as what they think they are!!!

ReB I think you are being a bit harsh on Dan there. A few years ago he was batting 10 in Adelaide's 3rd team. He has worked pretty damn hard at his batting and averaging 15 in his first year and a half in first class cricket is not that bad.

I dont know how many times you have seen him bat, but id be interested where you have come up with your comments on his technical problems?

Interesting article in the paper yesterday about the SA boys warming up for these games at the centre for excellence in Brisbane. Interesting to hear about Tait's views of the importance of relationships to him, which is a nice touch but apparently he spent a lot of time off the field on the recent Ashes tour in the company of one Shane Warne. Hope for his missus' sake that Warney didn't teach him too many "tricks of the trade", because let's face it, even if Shaun Tait wasn't a well known cricketer, he wouldn't exactly struggle to pull a woman (I hope those on here that know me don't think I've turned with that comment!   )

Not really an expert's opinion Mike, just an opinion. He didn't seem to have much idea to me on the (admittedly few) times I saw him bat. I'll take your word for it of course as to how hard he has worked on his batting and this is an admirable quality but my layman's evaluation about Cullen's batting was in comparision with other first class cricketers and not by anything Dan might have achieved on the district scene.

Always happy to be proven wrong by any Australian player as our blokes continuing that winning feeling is a lot more important than me being right.
