Its been noted that the WAFL have selected the East Freo captain in Shane Woewodin in the squad for the state game. the mail is that the coach has said that he needs to change the way he plays or he wont play. He has been averaging close to 30 possessions a game in the WAFL and it probably isnt hard to do so, but if they leave him out it would help our cause!

The WA coach is Peter German. We're training @ AAMI every Wednesday up till the game plus on Monday May 22 we will train at Adelaide.

What time does the game start and have they any pregames prior to main event?

In the past few state matches at Adelaide, the curtain raiser has been the SA U-18's vs. SA U-20's.

Maybe the Under-18's should play the WAFL Colts. Normal starting time of night games on Fridays is 7:40pm.

WESTERN Australia is taking the gloves off for a physical assault in the much-anticipated interstate clash against the SANFL in Adelaide in 20 days.

WAFL coach Peter German made a sneak visit to Adelaide last week to watch three high-quality SANFL games, including the Glenelg-North Adelaide clash when 18 goals were kicked in the third quarter on Sunday. Impressed by the depth of quality players in the SANFL, German said his outfit would attack the supply routes to starve SA's big forwards for the May 26 game under lights at Adelaide Oval. To do that, you've got to get physical, straight-talking German said.

"We're going to pick players with strong bodies who are able to absorb the pressure," he said. "I'm a bit concerned about SA's tall forwards.

"Nick Gill is the most exciting player I've seen in the lower leagues for a long time, then there's (Brant) Chambers and (Ben) Warren, so we're going to have to find three big defenders to take care of them.

"We've got to cut out that 'lace-out' supply.

"I'm sure we have players who can do that. We'll pick players who can stand up in a real pressure game."

German has lost 2005 Sandover Medallist and midfielder Toby McGrath, who twinged a hamstring playing with South Fremantle, while SA's Chris Gowans has ruled himself out with the same injury.

A former Kangaroos utility and close friend of Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson, who coached the SANFL when it beat the WAFL in 2003, German said he would not be lulled into playing SA's style.

He said the tough talents of midfielders Dean Howard (North Adelaide), Paul Thomas (Central), Adam Fisher, Brett Backwell (Glenelg) and Stephen Kenna (South) caused him concern.

"We'll understand the opposition and put some things in place but we're not going to get caught up too much in the opposition," he said. "We've got a totally different game over here which is based on running.

"I would say the skill level is on a par with SA but the SANFL was more about contested marks and a lot more clinches. We won't try to beat them at their own game."

after watching the 2003 state game and a few WAFL games whilst living there, i wouldnt say that there skill level was as good as ours, and if it was, it should be after all they just run, run and run. they dont know what contested marks are, hard ball gets etc..

the night game with rain will suit us to a tea as it closes the game down and requires hard attack at the footy, they just dont do that in WAFL.

i watched a WAFL game in 2003, only because it was on tv and i had a bet in it, Perth led by 17 points at the 26 minute mark of the last quarter and lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how? because when the other team started to get it out of the centre they didnt get man on man. Perth werent a bad team that year either.

Perhaps the SANFL and the clubs could come to an arrangement whereby, for a small additional fee, this match is included in the respective home match and/or season membership packages?

I appreciate the there is a promotional element. Whether a freebie State game translates to dollars at club level is yet to be seen.
