Nicknames??? - Can u think of any??

Postby evans01 » Fri Apr 18, 2008 10:43 pm

Nicknames are part of the Aussie way of life and the Sanfl is no exception......

As an Avid Maggies Fan i grew up listening to names like Brian "Bucky" Cunningham, Stephen "Bomber" Clifford, Tim "Burger King" Evans etc....

Any player nicknames u can think of and a reason why they earnt it?

Enjoy!!!!

With respect, as a 'dogs fan, the nicknames we had for the blokes above were somewhat different, all started with a "W" if I recall correctly :D

But in hindsight, only 'cos we couldn't beat the bastards

I remember Craig "Crabs" Earnshaw! I won't tell you why we called him that.

Quite probable, but if I recall correctly you positioned yourself directly behind the goals with the commoners whereas I would invariably be standing with the late '70's Elizabeth intelligentsia, between the goal and point post :)

There was a time when our leading ruckman was 'Big Dick' and our rover 'VD'. Richard Cousins and Rene Van Dommelle.

Craig Earnshaw! Theres a blast from the past Centurion.

As memory recalls, made his debut against Port in 1980. Ran amok across half forward in the first half & kicked 2 or 3 only to have his jaw smashed by DG (allegedly) in the second half. Same game saw Kym Lehmann suffer a depressed cheekbone & 3 other Dogs sporting broken noses. Or did I just dream it?? Oh Yeah- and we lost....again.
Interested to hear if anyone else sad enuff to have any recollections...

The usual susbect Jumbo Prince Davies, Studley Cornes...

The most stand out nickname I can rememebr from teh Bay is the boys used to call Grant Reubenicht "Victor" as in Victor the Russian News-reader from Fast Forward. He was a very un-attractive man....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yes, remember the game well! Craig was on fire until Grainger did what he was told by the coach AGAIN! One of our players had an eye pop out of its socket as well! Crabs was going to board with us up until this day & this match was the beginning of the end of his career-we even painted his bedroom-to-be red, white & blue!

He was a cricket team-mate and he kept asking why we called him that.

We told him it was because he was such a good fielder, there's no gaps when he's around (he'd win the assoc. fielding trophy year after year).

Took him five years to figure out why we called him Selley's. lol

why is perrie nicknamed sarge

bruce lennon - beatle

in the 98 2nd semi, sturt v west, you had toby kennett of sturt, nicknamed the premier by mark naley, then he also nicknamed dean howard the prime minister. all day you heard, 'the premier...the prime minister' in that annoying over excited naley voice :)
