A bloke I work with was a bit hard up for cash a few years ago, and hanging for a beer, decided to collect enough scrap metal from hard waste (West Richmond) to finance the thirst. With a mate they loaded up his ute and trailer, payed for 2 cartons and left them with $10 each in the pocket.

We also have the can-man rummage through our bins. I no longer feel bad about smac jr discovering the benefits ($$$) of recycling knowing that.

When I was a kid we used to go round collecting beer and wine bottles. We would just knock on the door of each house and ask. Mostly the bottles were stacked in the garage or out back.

then we'd take them to Mr Deanshaws bottle depot just past the oval in Salisbury. We collected so many I got an after school job there 8)

Dunno if it's still there now. Was just alongside the railway tracks

Seriously, we don't have decent Australian or English cars, but we do have a language to salvage if we can.

You have obviously not experienced the difference with driving German cars then!

My first 3 cars were Yanko-Australian GM products, and I have driven, but never owned, a few Fords. I agree my two Italian cars would not encourage me to by a third, although, when working, they handle well compared to the local product.

I once picked up a pushbike from hard rubbish so I could get home after a night on the amber nectar. Mind you it did have flat tyres.

As for recycling I keep all my cans and bottles and every now and then when have a couple of bags head off down to bottle depo to cash in, normally get enuff $$ to buy a pie and coke from bakery next door. When I was younger (about 13-15) i brought my first TV, vcr and an arc welder all with cans collected from my parents and neighbours who used to collect their cans for me too.
A guy from my work collects (we he did when Mitsi's was in full production mode) a full hession bag full (squashed cans too) everyday at work. He said from cans he collects each year he can pay council rates and other bills.
