A sad, sad day for Football.

Postby johntheclaret » Mon May 05, 2008 3:23 am

Stoke were promoted to the top flight after a 23-year-absence and Leicester were relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time after they shared a goal-less draw at the Britannia Stadium.

It was a rollercoaster of emotions on the final day of the season for the 26,609 fans inside the ground, particularly for those supporters from Leicester whose transistor radios were tuned into the extraordinary events taking place at St Mary's between Southampton and Sheffield United.
The tide turned many times for Foxes fans, but ultimately Southampton's 3-2 victory ensured they would be frequenting League One stadia next season.
By contrast, Stoke's promotion was all but sealed when news filtered through midway into the second half that Hull were losing at Ipswich.
On the field Stoke dominated the first half but could not manage to break the deadlock.
The visitors almost took the lead when Gareth McAuley headed a corner onto the right post in the 61st minute.
They then had a genuine penalty shout turned down when Richard Stearman was brought down on the edge of the box. Iain Hume put the subsequent free-kick over the bar.
With 10 minutes remaining Leicester twice came agonisingly close to scoring the goal that would have saved them. Stoke keeper Carlo Nash kept out Hume's half-volley before he athletically tipped Stearman's header over the crossbar from the resulting corner.
The game was held up by a pitch invasion during injury-time but it merely postponed the inevitable as both teams left the Championship, but in different directions.

I am still coming to terms with having to follow a team that is now in league 1 :(

A poor first half by us but at least we didn't concede a goal and Sheff United were trying to help us. Second half we looked a lot better and played with more urgency. We did everything but score - thanks to the post and their keeper pulling off* 2 blinders to deny us. Not being able to score and take our chances all season has caused us to drop. No point having the 2nd best defensive record in the Championship when we score FA!

A very sad day in the 124 yr history of the LCFC :( and one that might take years to recover from in terms of ever getting back to the premiership.

With hindsight, they might have been better staying at Filbert Street. Spend millioins on the Walker stadium then went into administration $65m in debt and got relegated from the EPL the same year. I don't think they ever recovered and the EPL looks a long long way off now.

btw, for what it's worth, they should have had a penalty. Can't remember who fouled who, but it was inside the box and the ref gave a free kick just outside. When everything is going against you.......

I'm not sure the change of Stadium had alot to do with it to be honest other than increase the debt issue. Not getting a better Manager after O'Neill left for Celtic is where the rot started to set in and not replacing quality players with equal or better. I could on for days about what happened from when O'Neill departed but whats the point?

I thought the penalty call was marginal but seriously we only have our selves to blame. 2 more points anywhere across the season would have helped including 4 weeks ago when we struggled to a 1-1 draw at home to Sc*nthorpe who had already had their fate sealed and were relegated :( .
