Poor excuse...... the crows have had one top 10 pick in it's history and had to rely on developing second and third round draft picks and rookies such as Bock, Rutten, Mattner while players such as knights and Johncock were late draft selections , if anything Port needs to look at its recruiting policy, Port decided to trade strong draft picks for the likes of Motlop.......

If you are going to be a successful club over long periods of time your not going to get the early picks you desire, so to stay competitve you need to do everything else top rate, recruitment, development of players, training, game strategy, Port once led the crows in these area, no more, the crows are now streets a head.....

Clubs that rely strictly on draft picks to be successful, will never be, just look at the saints

It certainly helps having access to the nations best players through early draft picks. I'm just trying to put things into perspective, it wasnt long ago that the Bulldogs were crap, they won today and deserved the win, but to imply that Port played like "women", i just thought needed a reply, gees look at our record over last 10 years, not too bad for a "new" team. Lets not also forget that despite the Crows being successful over the last 2 years, there was a period between their last premiership and a couple of years ago when they handed in some very ordinary performances as well. All clubs go through unsucessful periods, as seen by the way Brisbane, Essendon and Carlton are playing. Its the very nature of the way the AFL operates, unfortunately (or fortunately they would say).

Paying players (Tredrea, Wilson, Burgoyne etc) to stay out of the draft is draft tampering- Port Power were fined for this.

Not to mention Lade, and lets not forget the stirling performances of Port (after our two flags especially 2000 when halfway through the year they were rooted on the bottom and had a top 10 draft pick later that year and got Kane Cornes.

The Smears have had more top 10 draft picks than we have, Chad Cornes, Kane Cornes, Salopek v Angwin...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

If that is the case, it was common sense i would have thought. I mean they were Port (magpie)players, is it to much expect that they get to recruit a few of their own. Given how clubs like Richmond were determined to screw Port as much they could (by making it extremely difficult to recruit players through restrictive recruiting concessions), i would have thought that it was fair enough that Port do anything within reason to ensure a competitive squad.

Lets not get all moral about the draft and the AFL recruiting rules, we all know theyre unethical, and basically against the law of the land (Trade Practices legislation), hopefully a club or individual will do the right thing and go about challenging it soon, but with the might of the AFL its probably unlikely. I'm not a big fan of the draft, and i've mentioned on this forum a number of times. It basically rewards poor performing clubs and disadvantages club who are continually successful and are effective at developing their juniors. I also believe that players in any given club should predominantly have players from that state....i am an advocate for zoning (as i've mentioned on this forum a well), it forces clubs to be responsible for developing their own juniors, it also enables supporters to more closely identify with the players in the club (promotes tribal warfare).

I wasnt aware that the Crows had come into this debate. The Crows could have had Wells but they chose to go for Carey instead, well i think its pretty easy to tell whos fault that was!!!!

I have actually always said that both SA clubs have done extremely well given the lack of top 10 picks theyve had, i've never had an issue with the Crows recruiting concessions.

It's common sense to tamper with the draft? How so? Port Power were a new club, so effectively had no right to any players (& Lade was from South!) Bucky's reply to the fine? "we'll cop it on the chin"- of course you would! Port should've lost those players (a la Collingwood/Brett Chalmers)

I agree that a zone re-ignites the passion of tribal warfare. A lot of people in the mid-north follow the Roosters for this reason alone. The draft is here though, & rightly or wronly, to stay.

Common sense? Well is it common sense to put on the field a competitive side and not get flogged by 20 goals every week, i would have thought it was. What other AFL team in the same predicament wouldnt have done the same thing. This is how AFL clubs operate, they do anything within reason to shore up their playing stocks. As i said, they were screwed over by the AFL and clubs such as Richmond who wanted to give them nothing. The SANFL was considerably weaker when they joined in 97 than it was in 91 when the Crows did.....they had to get their players from somewhere. If the AFL had have given them fair recruiting concessions then there would be no need to use other avenues of recruiting. The draft is an immoral process, just because a club goes against it, doesnt mean they should be judged too harsly.

Difference being that Chalmers nominated for the draft, then wrote letters to intersted clubs advising them that he would not pay for them if they drafted.

The Port players in question - there were 10 including Tredrea, Burgoyne, Evans, Carr, Lade, Dew and a few others whose names escape me now - didn't nominate for the draft.

Brett Chalmers was fined $10,000 by the AFL. Had to pay it out of his own pocket after Collingwood dudded him.

I agree that a zone re-ignites the passion of tribal warfare. A lot of people in the mid-north follow the Roosters for this reason alone. The draft is here though, & rightly or wronly, to stay.

IMO, the draft has been pretty successful in stopping the cashed-up clubs from hording the best players.

However, I've always thought that a club should be able to pick one player each year from their zone.

Something like West Coast and Adelaide had in their original player concessions.

A lot of Port bashing going on here and normally I'm all for that but you Crow blokes are unbelievable. You might have the extra flag and less first round picks but the Power were a consistent top side for four years in a row and that is something the Crows have yet to achieve, even though they might be on the way to doing this now.

As for Port fans bashing Port, well, this is in fact why you are now struggling. Choco doesn't have the cattle any more it is as simple as that you can't lose Roger James, Matty Primus, Josh Carr, Damien Hardwick, Nick Stevens, Byron Pickett, Josh Carr (face it, he's gone) and Brent Montgomery in the space of a couple of seasons and expect to remain *ahem* a Power.

Changing the song wouldn't hurt also. Because now you've gone top top top, it appears that you have stop stop stopped.

Also Jarrad Schofield - great runner and link man.

Might as well throw Josh Francou in there as well because he pretty much hasn't played since 2002.

But try explaining that to Power fans, REB.

Some of them still think Jack Cahill was responsible for the 2004 premiership.

Most believe in the great myth that Chocko can't develop players.

Then there are idiots like the clown waving the 'Chocko for Baghdad' banner on Saturday.

But at the end of the day, the draft is one set of rules in a competition Port wanted to enter. If Port didn't like the rules, they shouldn't have joined.

I dont blame Chocco. We just dont have the players at the minute for various reasons. We are too small (ie need to bulk up), not aggressive enough, and apart from P Burgoyne, don't have a great midfield. We need a new fitness coach, and some players who aren't treadmills and who can hit a target from 50m away.

mate I think you are letting Choco of the hook a bit, personally I think sice the Premiership he has let too many ego's get out of control, he needs to forget about reputations and look a few players in the eye, I just feel over the past 18 months choco has had an opportunity to stamp out a few ego's and big heads, I am not convinced that he has taken a hard enough line with his players
