Roger told me Ruley kicked 9 of their 13 goals Tips, giving him 30 from 4 games!!
Tight game at Wangary, could have gone either way. First quarter both sides getting a feel for the contest. 2nd quarter thought we were on top and could have gone in at half time 4 goals up but 3 gettable shots were missed late all from 40-45 out. 9 point Ranger lead at the half. Waybacks then got some run going in the midfield and were a little cleaner and well drilled than us, did enough to keep the lead and the final margin of 8 points was fairly indicative of the game. Both sides still have 3-4 quality players to come back in and I think like 2004, all games will be tight unless injuries come into it. I love watching Brody Murphy play footy, just rises up between opponents and has great hands. Luke Harder put his nose over the ball as well for a kid, was impressed by that, played above his years and not all games will be that tough, he'll play some good games through the year.

Proposed Merger of PLFL @ GFFL

Following are points that I and a fair few others have had in mind for a long time. They are thoughts only and may or may not work for some reason(s) I haven’t thought of. If it is going to happen a few hard decisions will need to be made and an open mind is required for the betterment of footy overall, not just blinkered views. Just go back over the years and have look at the number of mergers that have taken place. Whilst most of these would have been forced due to lack of numbers, the underlying thing is that it did happen. The main reasons behind a PLFL and GFFL merger are to strengthen them and improve the quality of footy and promote more of a family day (at least for the PLFL member clubs). So here we go:
1. Merge Tumby and Ungarra – This will bite to the bone on some members of both clubs however geographically it makes huge sense. Also both clubs have been not quite there in terms of premierships in a fair while and the combined team would be some force. It happened to a degree with their respective Lawn Bowls clubs and some of those fellows have been through a lot longer period of rivalry between the 2 towns than most of us and yet no major problems have arisen.
2. Merge Lock and Yeelanna – Both have struggled for quite awhile and the same geographic reasons exist. Once again the combined side would be competitive and with the youngsters both clubs have (and hopefully retain) they may be more than just competitive in coming years.
3. Ramblers – Stay as they are. A traditional and very strong club. Enough said.
4. Merge Cougars and Marble Range – Both are rural communities. Some of the Cougar boys might not wish to play with Rangers and vice versa however those that did would combine into a very competitive outfit. If Ramblers picked up a few of the Cougar boys – so be it. Geographically makes sense.
5. Merge Waybacks and Bostons – Waybacks could probably stay as they are as they have got there act together in recent years (geez that hurts) and are a very strong, traditional club. However perhaps merging with Bostons will solve the current (and for quite a while most probably) uncompetitiveness of Bostons and the problems that brings. What to do with Poole oval ?
6. Merge Souths and Tasmans – There will be some cries about this idea, however a combined side would be a strong threat to other sides. The problem here is that Souths probably have the best clubroom set up this side of the black stump and Tasmans have got the new Ravendale complex – What do you do? Perhaps this one won’t work.
7. Mallee Park – to fold and disperse their players through the other teams at their personal discretion. This was how it used to be. And funnily enough, Jack Johncock said the same thing a couple of years ago so there is obviously some support for this suggestion already.
This will leave a 6 team comp and what a strong one it would be.
A lot of the 30+’s can retire as there will be a strong player list at all of the proposed merged clubs.
There may be some other combinations of mergers particularly with the PLFL clubs – thoughts everybody please. Maybe merge into an 8 side comp. rather than 6.
Netball – Above won’t work without netball. Suggest each netty club aligns itself with a footy club (already in place in GF). This is already partly in place (eg Rangers/Wanilla, Bostons/Bostons, Lincoln Souths/Lincoln Souths etc etc) Work out which grades would play alongside the footy at the host venue (say A’s, B’s U17’s U15’s etc) and they do just that. The remainder, and there would be some from Port Lincoln especially, would form a separate league. Most of these would be the younger girls. Heavens knows what the PL Netball Assoc will say to this.
Junior Football – Perhaps suggest the PLFL clubs align with what GFFL does as much as possible in terms of number of junior sides. Say an U17’s and an U14’s or 13’s. The rest, as with netty, form their own comp. Perhaps with the merged sides each club would have a greater number of juniors which would allow each to field 3 junior sides
I personally reckon it would be great to get back to the way GFFL do it – whole families there for the day – men’s footy, women’s netty and children’s footy and netty.
Result of all this in some form or another – strong, vibrant A and B grade competition with an assured future for a long, long time, healthy numbers in all grades as well as realignment of families in the Port Lincoln football and netball communities.
Maybe some opposition to some clubs merging and a topic for debate is what do we do with two separate club facilities (eg Eyre United and Tumby) – maybe play a home game at each in turn.
There may be a loss of some players to the game. Take say Marble Range and Cougars for example. With their merger several players would not get a game in the B grade. I have major doubts, be they right or wrong, that clubs like Waybacks, Souths and MR would ever merge, with anyone. Just from what I saw in my time in Lincoln.
Can't speak for GFFL teams though.

Good effort Steiger. My varaitions would be to push Lock north into Mid West, merge Cougars and Yeelanna and maybe merge Rangers with Bostons so we could have Poole as our Lincoln home ground. Either that or disband the Tigers and give Souths Poole. These are all just ideas and not what I believe should happpen or want to happen.....

From what I saw on Saturday at the 'gary, I think that both sides can expect to be major players is September. Interesting game, almost like a title fight with both sides playing cards close to their chest. Reckon if that game was played in September they would not line up the same way....Parker tagging George and TK, Donk & Bilney in the forward lines at the same time?????? What about Watho's goal in front of the faithful in the first qtr, then followed up by Mickey B's goal 1 min later....would go a long way to see two better goals back to back in any level of footy let alone the PLFL.
Also think the B's for both sides are building for a strong year. With what I hear about to resume in the next couple of weeks for us, and similar for the Rangers, a 2004 repeat is looming.
And finally, loved the 17's game..hard tough fair and skillful..probably involved 8 of the best 25 on the peninsula...worth the water bag trip just to see that.

more food for thought wcp.....but I would be dead against leaving Ravendale - considering our long term history at that oval (when NO ONE ELSE wanted a bar of it) and the fact that our clubrooms is across the road.....

Great day out at the gary on saturday...superb playing surface, entertaining footy and from a B Grade perspective the game as always was played in good spirits due to the strong rivalry that has developed between our two clubs..looking forward to our next trip out there.
How was Freeo's speech saturday night?? did he dwell on the loss or shift the focus to the next game??

By saying that Rossco, are you inferring that Tasmans will have the clubrooms at Ravendale but not the ground? I have noticed a few darts thrown around between Bluesy & eppie etc when the grounds are mentioned but I am not as well informed as you guys. Can you shed some light for us on the Ravendale 'Oval' issues......

Think the ultimate solution for Ravendale is for WaybackFC & TasmanFC to be co-tenants.
Lincoln South then move to Centenary...this was probably likely to happen over the journey of this season, but the lights debate put a spanner in the works.
Honestly think that LS preferred option would be Centenary....just need to improve the Centenary lights to convince them to move..they honestly have no real affinity with the ground, only a training venue..
For this to happen the TFC need to sever all football ties with Centenary..can't have it both ways guys!!...
From a WFC point of view, we welcome our new tenants with open arms...gr8 to have them in the area. More footy at Ravendale each week is good for the Demons no doubt.

Agree that Souths should move to Centenary and why can't they improve the lighting themselves or at least go 50/50 with council. Wangary needs new lights currently and guess who will pay for that. Souths are making plenty but have never had to worry about oval maintenance etc as we do...
