Guess Port's nine AFL quality players

Depth is a vastly misunderstood concept when it comes to assessing lists. Some might define depth as the number of players 'rated' by neutral observers but when your team is consistently at or at the top of the tree as Brisbane and Port were, it offers little to no opportunity to get some games into the younger players on your list.

I believe that depth can also be defined as the number of options available in each position..some times clubs make what appear to be puzzling selections on the surface for the sake of team balance in the name of risk management.

My point is, it is not that Port, Brisbane or Essendon lack depth, it is just that they have been top sides three to five years ago and it takes a long time to develop a young list as Choco has stated recently. These three teams are 'missing' a generation of players..that is players who now have 50 to 100 games up. The sides who do have a lot of players in this bracket like the Bulldogs, Geelong and Collingwood will make the finals this year. The top four teams like Adelaide, Sydney and West Coast have a bit more again.

If you are looking at a teams with no depth then they are Richmond, Carlton and the Kangaroos. Richmond have had ample opportunity to develop young talent but the cupboard appears bare, Kangaroos have topped up following mid table finishes and Carlton have not had the opportunity due to the suspension from the draft.

Ask any Cat fan. It takes about five years to develop a side that will challenge again and there will be plenty of ups and downs along the way and there is no guarantee that the list your club has assembled will stand up.

i choose Damon White and Brendon Lade (when playing forward). Lade has been a standout in what has otherwise looked like a very ordinary team all year.

So the Power have no depth.... or are those kids rising in the ranks not being able to play to their full potential because every week the team hopes that the great tredders will finally come good? Too much reliance on the unfit/ out of form captain i say...

Perhaps,when one player has an undue amount of pressure placed on him by members of the public,and then fails to deliver for what can amount to be as little as two weeks,(even when returning from injury) the restless can begin to be not so faithful?

Instead of bagging a truly top quality player FC,just say you dont like him and be done with it,mind you,just because you dont like some one doesn't make him a bad player......

No disagreement with your views there REB, but if a player isn't in a position to perform at the level the coach desires at the time (even for reasons not of his own doing, like lack of experience etc) it still surely affects the depth at that given time??

Get off your high horse Boon..... WHERE in this post have I ever said i dont like Tredders? I infact rate him highly under normal circumstances, HOWEVER i was making a what a lot of people would see as a fair and valid point in that he has no form at the minute, I never said that made him a BAD player and i certainly did not bag him, I just said i wouldnt put him in the QUALITY list AT THIS POINT IN TIME. I'll thank you not to put words in my mouth, I always thought you were better than that..
