I am assume the *'s are KG's side kick Alby, living in Melbourne would you care to comment on the SANFL games you've seen Graham Cornes at? Goes to the Bay pretty regularly mate and IS a supporter of the SANFL.

Would be surprised if they changed the league name. The admin name is another matter - AFLSA is not too far away (in line with AFL Victoria, AFLNSW etc), particularly when the AFL provide the funding for many of the jobs at West Lakes.

I'm a traditionalist and small "c" conservative - SANFL for me.
And I think we should have formed a National Football League with less Melbourne teams in it - and left the VFL a bit more competitive!

Did anyone get that brand survey email last week?

There were a lot of leading questions asking if you would accept a name change to AFL SA.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

JAS wrote:The same question was asked in a recent online survey that the SANFL had done by a company called Squareholes*. It was asking for opinions on how the SANFL brand is perceived and how it might be improved IIRC

I opted for SAFL so it's in keeping with VFL, WAFL etc

KG and Cornsey also mentioned the SANFL logo which was on the survey too.

JAS

I also opted for the name to be changed to SAFL. A change of logo also wouldn't be a bad idea to bring it into the modern age

If there's a need for us to change from SANFL to SAFL, then surely the VFL needs to be changed to the VAFL!
Then we'd have SAFL, VAFL, WAFL, QAFL, TAFL, NSWAFL, ACTAFL, NTAFL etc.
Let the states have their intial first!
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.

But wouldn't that mean that SANFL would have to change to SAAFL :?

I was opting for South Australia Football League to be inline with Victoria Football League, Western Australia Football League etc.

What a strange survey that was...I was only confident in answering about half of it but certainly rejected the idea of a rebadged SANFL. AFLSA is an insult.

Why change to SAFL or AFLSA?

Will more people go to local matches? No.
Will the local comp or clubs make any more money? No.
Will it improve our standing nationally? No. (we just thumped the Vics, we know its the premiere state comp)
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I did the squareholes survey too and agree the SANFL logo probably needs a facelift, but keep the name as it is.

To me, AFLSA would cheapen the competition, sounds like another AusKick-style comp.

What is this survey that everyone got? Over the internet? Mailed out?

Theri, mine arrived as an email on 23/5 with a closing date of 30/5. I assume they got my name from the NFC as I'm only registered with them, the Legs forum and here...I've never registered with the SANFL site yet the email began 'Dear Jackie'.

It said that the SANFL were assessing their brand and communications. The survey itself was mostly multi choice questions about the name, logo, attendance of games...this counts as short-term memory so others can probably remember the questions better than me

Token Vic on the board here.

I like the SANFL name. Will always be that within my mind and I don't see a reason for any change. In this modern era when everything is about your 'brand' then surely SANFL is the most powerful football brand in SA after the two AFL clubs?

As for the thought that the administration might one day become AFLSA I would say get used to the idea. I work for AFL Victoria which was formerly Football Victoria. The power that the AFL brand brings with it is incredible. Every little kid through to aged pensioner who knows anything about football identifies with the AFL logo. The staff at Football Vic didn't agree with the change but would be quick to acknowledge that it certainly heightened our profile. With every state bar SA and WA falling in line with this naming convention it seems inevitable. It's similar to the Federal Government and education. Education is governed by the states' but the federal government wanted to have some input into a national reporting format so they made millions of dollars available BUT only if each individual state introduced the preferred reporting format. Bingo! The states' and country now have a national reporting format and the indvidual state's have their cash.
The AFL has the biggest purse in football and allocates funds to all others governing bodies at state level. The AFL wants their brand to be the predominant one in the football world. The state governing bodies that need the funding from the AFL to run their programs ahave already fallen into line. The two left are the two other traditional football states'. How long will they be able to hold out before they fall in line? I think Neale Fong and his crew in WA have already had serious discussions about becoming AFLWA. Take it as read it will eventually happen IMHO.

I'm still hoping the Alternative Football League will die and be replaced by a National Football League with only about 6 Melbourne clubs in it, and another 6 from outside Melbourne, providing a more balanced, and genuinely national, league. Perhaps when Telsta own the entire AFL a rebel structure will emerge!

Folks its a good old time set up. IMO the decisions have already been made.

The on-line survey (yes I let then know as well) the 'focus' groups etc etc will all 'inform' the final report which will be used a justification for negative change. We (the sanfl tragics) are very much the square pegs (ha, ha) in the corporate/AFL/media/branding/form over substance round hole.

The stratigic rational for 'change' (which we need but not the sort which I fear is coming) will be meaningless comparisons between things once upon a time and now. The operational rational will be drawn from a consultants report (see above), which will have bucketloads of empirical evedence of stakeholder consultation, and tacit support from our clubs, who will be promised lots of gravy as a result of the changes. :(

Sorry about the rant.
