The Price Of Petrol

The tv news here last night was headlining with stories of fuel thefts. Apparently due to the rocketing prices of both petrol and deisel several people have found that their car fuel tanks are being syphoned by theives...in towns/cities as well as country areas.

The main advice was not to keep the tank as full as possible...the less there is in it the less you'll lose and it might even put the theif off sending him looking for a full tank. Apparently those who use oil-fired heating in their homes have had similar problems...returning home to find the tank has been syphoned.

Although fuel theft has had some minor publicity recently I think it's now getting top billing here because of this tragic incident.

Yeah, I've heard that too. We have kerosine heating oil and the tanker driver told us that theives had been following tankers who are delivering to heating oil houses, then going back, checking to see if anyone is in and then syphoning the oil.

Not suprised, as it now costs me around £450 to fill up ($900+) now, compared to about £260 ($520+) less than 12 months ago.

No mate, it's my heating oil for the house. Tank holds about 900 litres and over here heating oil is essentially diesel with a red dye in it. They put the dye in because it is supposed to be only used for farming and domestic use, but there are plenty out there who are happy to risk it.

What the hell would you need a heater for in rural England? The way you carry on you'd think it gets cold or something there.
Got down to 10 here last night, now that's bloody freezing!

And at 5.18am in York it is now "partly sunny" and a balmy 11 C, with 20 C and rain expected - mind you that's summer there.

We've decided to come for 6 months and look the scene over. The buying property issue comes up while the $AU is strong and UK prices are down, regardless of whether we stay there or not.

My wife is interested for two reasons:
One, she never had less trouble with her asthma than when she was staying in the UK some years ago.
Two, she is part French and anything nearer Paris appeals to her.

Me: I've been offered good money for part-time work in the UK and want to tour Europe.

We are not too fussed about the weather - we live above 570 metres hear and it often snows here - even Christmas Day 2006 in the middle of summer!

Fuel is definitly going up. and with the last warning coming from the CEO of opec well its clear that the only way is up and fast. For them there is no incentive for them to even try and keep prices down.

But the answer is well we need to use our cars less. I understand that if your living down south this is impossible as public transport is crap. But we need a public transport revolution.

The concept of the tram extention was good but the actual reasult was lacking. Trains need to be improved.

Electric Cars.
Get talking about them people!!!!
The lesser the demand, the slower they will be developed.
Of the fully electric vehicles I have heard:
Mitsubushi is going to release a vehicle called the IMiev in 2010. The range is only about 160 kms at this stage but the people in the think tanks are developing the Lithium battery to increase that range, apparently the breakthroughs have already been made, but more money needs to be flowing into the development to deliver these breakthroughs to the common market.
Reva has been producing the GWiz for years now, not as impressive as the IMiev IMO, it has a shorter range, doesn't look as good, but it is actually on the market and getting produced as we speak.
Tesla, a start up company from California is on the verge of releasing the first batch of high performance "Roadsters" from the assembly line. There are already about 4 or 5 of them on the road, they have a range of about 240 kms, look very cool, and will beat just about any fuel powered vehicle in a drag off a standing start. Very impressive car, but expensive, the waiting list is already about 2 years to own one of these. The company is planning to release a more family friendly vehicle as soon as its infrustructure can handle it.
My solution for rising fuel prices.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Nah, the solution is hydrogen powered cars, or cold water fusion reactors.

At this stage we could use fission power for desalinatiing water and extracting hydrogen to provide fuel, moving from Thorium fission towards fusion as we develop the technology.
It looks like we'll have Helium3 fusion before cold fusion, but its a start.

What is it currently? I think I paid $1.80 last time I caught a bus.

Price of petrol is disturbing at the moment. I chose to stay home yesterday so I had enough petrol to get to work and back today without needing to refill until tightarse Tuesday.

No idea, i was thinking of catching a train to work, but $8.40 (two way), plus the 15 min walk to and from the station has changed this mind.
