Be wary of iPods - that's the most common item sold through hijacked accounts since the demand is so high.

I absolutely love my 80 Gb iPod. Actually sounds better than the 4G ipod and the gapless playback is pretty cool. The battery life is phenomenal ompared to the 4G too. I don't use it for video much but when I have the screen is big and clear. The only thing I hate Apple for with the new Ipods is how skimpy the box has become - you used to get the dock thrown in, now you've got to pay extra. They don't even give you a power cable. Hell, they don't even give you iTunes, you have to download it. That doesn't worry me overly but it is pretty rude!

The sheer fact I need a third party application (or an application in general) to put songs on it puts me right off.

Fair enough. As a music nerd I love being able to order and search songs, rate them, create smart playlists based on those ratings, automatically download album art, purchase from a store when need-be, sync my iPod, download and keep track of my podcasts, update my iPod's firmware automatically, view my photos...yeah it really sucks ;)

I never carry music around with me as I usually have to concentrate on what I am doing. On the other hand I like to concentrate on music when I listen to music. Also, I move around too much to clutter my self and my pockets with gadgetry.

The exception is that I can drive and listen to music... ahhh.. 206Kw from my little AWD 2-door coupe and ABC-FM through the 4-channel BOSE sound system. The MP3 format is not really good enough quality for anything but muzak.

mp3s is so 2004.

I spend my time on the bus watching movies and tv shows on my phone, cant understand why people buy ipods when smart phones do a better job for a cheaper price.
Ive even configured my daughters Nintendo DS to play movies and mp3s as well as play downloaded games.
Ipods are for lazy people or dumb people IMHO.

The only problem with smart phones is the cost of running them. We have two mobile phones in the house, both on iSim prepaid which is 39c per minute charged by the second with no flagfall, and minimum cost is $20 per year.

When I use public transport, rarely because most of my life I have lived where there is little of it, I take a book - I can read a lot faster than I can watch video and cover more ground. I prefer web sites I can just read for the same reason - there is always something you can do with the time saved.

I really resent that last comment. And what do you mean phones do a better job? They sound worse, hold less and are as soulless a way of listening to music as I can think of (apart from listening to music on a bleeding games player FFS!). I can't imagine how you could kid yourself that watching movies on a phone (or an iPod for that matter) is a pleasurable experience. If, like me, you just want a dedicated music player that sounds good (admittedly within the limitations of mp3) and holds the maximum amount possible, nothing currently comes within a bull's roar of the iPod.

And please... the amount of 'dumb people' who have to have the latest whizz-bang mobiles to impress their equally gullible mates, on ridiculous never-ending payment plans (ooh...but it comes with free Nintendo!), who annoy people with obnoxiously loud ringtones, who keep inane TV quizzes hosted by Hotdogs on the air, who talk while driving and **** up every concert I've been to in the last 5 years.... greatly outnumber the knob-element of the iPod crowd.

But of course that's the other guy isn't it?

Oh agreed and its these dumb people who dont understand how to use technology to get the most out of their phone (or have the smarts to get it on a decent plan) and end up buying an ipod hence my point.

Have you looked at the other options zipzap? There are plenty of dedicated mp3 players that have better features than an iPod IMHO.

And hold 80GB? Please, show me.

But do you need 80GB??

I get by with 70GB for my entire computer - a pair of 36GB Raptors striped, speed not capacity being the priority. Of course I don't download everything in sight just the things that really matter. At a some stage you reach a point where you are just collecting for the sake of collecting, like those people who finish up with their house half full of model cars or dollies that they don't actually do anything with!

[I admit I have put 120GB in my older but compact XC Cube that I am turning into a digital TV tuner and video recorder, but that is because of the volume video takes.]

My God, who have you been talking to? You've pretty much nailed it

But when it comes to music, too much is never enough.

Yeh, me too, although the ipod is much more compact than my 40gb iriver. A guy at work purchased an 80gb ipod during the week and now is finding out how to set up itunes with no internet access at home, and no authorisation to do so at work.
