Have always considered Ian Bell a very overrated cricketer.
2591 runs at 41.79 (before this Test), with seven centuries (averages a century every ten innings) and 18 fifties (just under every four innings).
His averages against the decent bowling attacks are 25.10 (v Australia), and 26.75 (v India). He has not scored a century against those sides.
The South African attack simply isn't what it used to be, and that shows, with a substandard cricketer performing as he did.

I guess that explains why MALS boy KP scored 150 as well

They were clobbered by KP and BELL did some damage as well
When they get KP cheap EG will falter in this series

MAL - Besides Steyn and the unproven SNorkel that test attack has a bully boy reputation about it.
Ntinin and Kallis are crap and only prey upon the likes of NZ.etc.
Harris from what I saw was shite and nothing to work with.


Snorkel has plenty of potential I agree but besides Steyn the SAfrican attack is borish and ordinary much like their captain.

yes my reaction too

but I think bowling in hindsight may have been the wrong decision, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The problem was how Smith utilised or didnt utilise his bowling attack.

vaughnan was going to bowl too mal so dont be too hard on smith, nothing wrong with bowling first if you bowl properly but south africa bowled too short and too wide - smith can hardly be blamed for that

umm what else were you going to do? why is everyone on here having a go at the captains? the pitch was an absolute batting dream for the most part, the game was pretty much always going to be a draw as south africa wouldve been very unlikely to get rolled cheaply twice. the only chance england had of winning the game was to enforce the follow on, the only chance south africa had of winingh the game would have been to bowl first and hope to get a couple of quick wickets early and get pietersen in in teh first session of the match

i believe Vaughan also tried different field settings etc in SA second innings - maybe he was clutching at straws in trying to steal a wicket, but if you dont try you dont know and England were the only team that could have won the game after setting a big first innings total and bowling SA out cheaply.

But the England bowlers dont have much recovery time, the next test starts friday i think.
