HISTORY QUIZ NO. 14 WHO AM I

Postby magpie in the 80's » Tue Jul 15, 2008 5:03 pm

To guess the identity of these people from history, simply read the rhyme

1. "I'm trotting fast down leafy lanes, with tired soldiers and faithful Thanes,
One battle won but another coming. Just watch me send those Normans running,
They're burning villages, there's smoke in the sky, Well, you know what they say - an eye for an eye."
HAROLD II
2. "I've lost my horse and I've lost my throne, now I'm surrounded and all alone,
Deserted by those whom I put in high place, I die on this field, my name in disgrace."
RICHARD III
3. "Im nicknamed Bulgaroctonus and I'm a frightful sort of man, I've destroyed so many people in this battle-weary land,
Think of Samuel and his Bulgars who, when I was elsewhere, Sought to reclaim this Balkan land for his undeserving heir,
They faced me in a battle, where to their surprise, I captured fifteen thousand - and then took out their eyes."
BASIL II
4. "I wander lonely as a cloud, Best thing to do to - avoid that Union crowd,
The armies fought well and the men were so brave, But look around now, not one single slave!"
JEFFERSON DAVIS
5. "So long ago my glory past, Priests confounded me until, at last
I removed my people from their tuition, To found a new city and better their condition
For there can be only one god, a real number one And Aton's the name, lord of the sun."
AKHNATON
6. "I'm a king and I'm gay, but do I really care? I'm the boss, I'm in charge so let the fools stare,
I'll need to get married but I swear by my troth, that that's really fine, I'll get pleasure from both,
The English and Scots in this rigid clime will find this Scots king of England is ahead of his time."
JAMES VI
7. "The first king of my line, I'm gracious and kind, I've a name like a biscuit but I don't really mind,
Famed for my tolerance and my belief in detente, Witness my masterpice, the Edict of Nantes
HENRY IV
8. "They fear me and tremble at my masterful shout, Tho' I'm short and quite hairy and inclined to be stout,
I've outdone that barbarian Attila the Hun, For thirteenth century conquest I am number one!"
GENGHIS KHAN
9. "They killed me, those ingrates - for they could not see? That this city, it's future was all about me,
They espoused the republic and despised the word king, So now it would seem that my murder's the thing,
They dream when I'm gone that all will be well, But there's much worse that's coming and history will tell."
JULIUS CAESAR
10. "I smash 'em, I bash 'em, I crush 'em to dust, Victory for me is an absolute must,
When I see opposition I don't wait till later, That's not the way for an evil dicator,
The Poles and the Russians, they've all got to go, those Anglo-French weaklings some toughness I'll show,
Their soft skinned appeasement shall get them no more, This Austrian fruit-cake will show them real war."
ADOLF HITLER
11. "Stuck on rock for the second time, conquering nations was my crime.
I'm bored, I'm miffed, there's nothing to do, I wish I had won at Waterloo."
NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
12. "Six feet two with eyes of blue, some say I was made of iron.
Being Chancellor was great but I did make one mistake
It was Keiser Bill I should have kept my eye on."
BISMARCK
13. "Fear me and tremble you miserable clod, You are standing before a real 'scourge of God'."
ATILLA THE HUN
14. "I conquered gaily with the boys, chopping those Persians and stealing their toys -
But my bestest friend, I'd known him for years, went and dropped dead, and now I'm in tears
Nothing's the same and time marches on, so I think I'll rest in old Babylon."
ALEXANDER THE GREAT
15. "I slaughtered my nephew, had him dumped in a river, but I now find that I'm all of a shiver
My muscle bound brother, that lion hearted fool, got himself killed and that's really cool
'Cos now I'm the king and that's what I was after; but those barons do irk me, should I sign their damn charter?"
KING JOHN I
16. "They say I was henpecked and under the thumb 'cos my wife ruled the roost and she was number one,
But now she's departed and can boss me no more, So this big Egyptian is going to war."
THOTHOTES III
17. "I'm a reasonable king and not at all bad, It's those defiant Continentals that make me so 'mad',
They molest my officials, we have been far too lax, Believe me my friends - I shall have my tax!"
GEORGE III
18. "Now you listen to me, chaps, I'm king by God's grace, So do what I tell you and remember your place!
What's that you say, you'll take rebellion instead? You surely don't mean that you'd cut off my head?"
CHARLES I
19. "Why don't you quit and get yourselves home? Your king can do nothing and you're all on your own,
This York's not in Yorkshire and your ammo is sparse, So accept this agreement and get outta here fast!"
GEORGE WASHINGTON
20. "Round and around the Spartan,
Fight him if you dare, I did, at Thermopylae, without so much as a care
The performance of my men was simply a disgrace, Oh, how I wish now that I had never seen that wretched place."
XERXES I
I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out. - Rodney Dangerfield (1921 - 2004)
