As I have posted in some medical forum threads, the expectations of weight for height have changed towards lower advisory weights in the last 10 years, just as "acceptable" cholesterol levels have been lowered over the last 3-5 years. Older charts of expected weight used to offer weight expectations in terms of light, medium, and heavy, frame types. The cynic in me notes that the drop in expected weight occurred when the Pharmaceutical companies were heavy into appettite suppressant medications, and the cholesterol target since the big development in lipid lowering drugs.

It is not that doctors generally are being paid to toe the line, but there is selected funding of research grants in underfunded universities by the Pharmaceutical companies, and the papers that come out of these studies are used to propagandise doctors in the field, who are, in these litiginous days, paranoid about being sued for negligence in under-treating these conditions, and therefore err in the other direction for safety.

If something is said often enough and backed up by enough publications, even if the science is dubious, it tends to become accepted "truth".

My BMI is 30 at present. I'll be happy when it is 26.

Not down at all mate. I'm fitter now than I was ten years ago. Since I started running my knees are actually giving me a lot less trouble (probably because they don't have to haul the extra 18 kilo I was lugging around in November 2006.)
