A cold and strong wind straight off the coast and rain greeted the 300+ people brave enough to front up to Woodville Oval today. South started well, capitalizing on two Eagles errors deep in defence to register two goals early in the game. Goals were always going to be tough on a day where getting the ball forward by any means was the order of the day. 16 year old Goldsworthy registered the Eagles first major and by quarter time the scores were just about level.

The Eagles started well in the 2nd quarter, making most of the play, before South turned the game around from about half way through the quarter, getting first to the ball and being marshalled by Torney off half back. Neither side could really capitalize on the scoreboard though, and South went into the major break up 4 goals to 3 and probably with a little bit of momentum in terms of general field play. McKenzie, Corbett and Klun were the major driving force for the Eagles in the first half. Corbett in particular was impressive and his hard at it style of play suited the conditions.

The Eagles came out after half time with Treeby one out up at Full Forward and Passador up to the half forward flank. This proved to be the match winning move, with Treeby booting 3 goals for the term, including a double play, where he sucked in former Eagle Illjecsson to give away a free kick when the ball should have gone back to the middle. Hall kicked a great goal from the cricket club pocket which had the approval from the vocal crowd taking shelter in the Barry Jarman Stand. The Eagles took a match winning lead of 3 goals into the final break and extended this out to a 33 point win in the last quarter.

Besides that period in the 2nd quarter, the Eagles dominated play and could've won by more. It was old fashioned muddy footy and the umpires did well to let play flow throughout the day. Torney I thought was the visitors best and for the Eagles, McKenzie across 4 quarters was outstanding. Other best players for the Eagles I thought were Geddes, Corbett, Klun and Treeby for his match winning 3rd quarter up forward.

Unfortunately other games didn't go our way, with North beating Central and Norwood upsetting Sturt. However, the last two weeks have been a big improvement and with a large contingent of young players holding their own at this level, it should be an exciting final few weeks of the season after the bye.

Granted that Treeby's move forward was indeed a match winner-he was also assisted by some very frustrated and ill disciplined South defenders.
The other match winner in the 3rd quarter was Colin Rolston, who after a first half where he was hardly sighted finally managed to exert his influence on the game,and went on to provide us with one of the most insipid and incompetent umpiring displays in modern times.

No Otten no South seems to be a familiar pattern at present, some good juniors for sure at South, yet we need to make every post a winner in recruiting for next season if the side is going to become seriously competitive at SANFL level.

Ron Fuller is certainly known for throwing the dice; today it came up snake eyes for South. Mark Passador was not really in the game in the 1st half when the conditions were at their worst. Leigh Treeby was moved to full forward in the third and had 4 different opponents during that quarter. One of those was ex-Eagle Denis Iljcesen - Colin Rowston had no other alternative to give another free against him to notch up Treebys third immediately after his 2nd. One other goal in that quarter was a brilliant goal by Chris Hall. I like this guy - a very good crumbing forward, who kicked a goal near the boundary from about 45 out on the run.

But the man of the past few weeks has been sensational skipper Mark McKenzie. No one ever seems to be on him, which I guess shows how he can slip away from opponents at the right time. He could very well have polled 9 Magarey Votes in the past three weeks. I thought Corbett and McGregor were two others who did a lot of good handling skills in the slippery and muddy conditions.

Full credit to South however, fighting the game out to the end - they could have had a better chance if the game was played in fine conditions, because for some reason we seem to excel in the wet weather - last years qualifying a rare exception.

That would have to be the lowest crowd I have seen at Woodville, but well done to those who cannot be called fairweather fans and braved some of the coldest weather I have seen for a day match - probably the 2002 match at Noarlunga the only exception.

There aren't too many players who can do that, I didn't see him put a foot wrong today. I'm not directly overall comparing McKenzie to this player, but one that I have heard that had that quality was Lindsay Head.

Disappointing second half, after I thought the boys effort and commitment until then had been first rate. It was one those games where a team would have the ball in their 1/2 for up to 10 minutes without anything really happening. Ball up after ball up.

I thought Williams played a solid game for South. He's had a pretty decent month actually. Torney lead by example, Boyd was busy, and I thought big Tommy Hateley was alright. A few of the guys with less than 5 games to their name looked ok.

I've never liked Rowston. Today did little to change my opinion.

Well done to the Eagles. A lot of their 'lesser names' were superb. Today I really appreciated just how good Mark Mckenzie is. Head and shoulders above everybody else out there with his run and skill level. They won the ressies by 3 goals as well.

Definitely the smallest crowd I've been apart of.

Congratulations to the eagles and panther supporters who turned up today at Woodville - crowd was 1100.

The WWTFC took the decision to open the stand free of charge to those in attendance (the two stands at woodville have capacity of 1200). The Jarman stand was quite full. Many stayed in the clubrooms watching from upstairs.

The crowd of 1,100 is the lowest ever at Woodville. The previous lowest crowd was 1,294 in Round 19 1971 between Woodville and South. The previous lowest crowd since 1992 was 1,408 in Round 23 1997 between Eagles and South.

Well what a day it was yesterday at Oval Ave .
The seconds game started with a very strong wind that blew to the southern end of the ground .Which made scoring very hard to near impossible to the Port Road end of Oval Ave.In fact in the first half it was a goaless end of Oval Ave with a lonely point being the only score to the Eagles.First quarter it was 5.6 south to 1 point Eagles.The rest of the seconds game the Eagles scored 10 goals while south scored 3 . A great fight back by a young team with very few Forwards .
During this game we had almost gale winds and rain so thick and heavy it made viewing almost impossible.Even though I pre book my GS seat was a very good PR move by the club to allow everyone in to the Jarman stand.And I could see the FOX stand was almost covered in water from the rain!!
So the main game got under way .And from the outset South were there to play footy.Five minutes in and the Eagles looked in trouble.But halfway through the first term(I think as the clock was not always working)the eagles took back control .The wind seemed to have died some what and scoring was possible at the Port Road end .
The second quarter to me was all South my Eagles seemed to have lost their way and gone to SLEEP. I think the Eagles crowd had nodded off as well!!

So the only ones for the Eagles who appeared awake were in the COACHING BOX .Not sure if Ron thought of the move or it was Shane or Mark. But some one pat the guy on the back who actually changed the Eagles Forward line .All be it for one single quarter of footy but it won the game .In what could be described as across between Pagans Paddock and Scott Morphett reinvented .Leigh Treeby confused the Backmen for South .All the other forwards including Mark Passador moved to the half forward line leaving Treeby to lead into the hole.a special mention to Mark Passador,not sure if he is fully fit .But his second efforts including a slick little handball to young gun Hall resulted in a perfectly slotted goal from the Jarman stand pocket .
And Souths Backman were in disaray. In scenes that reminded this Eagles Fan of a South coached by Pyeman two goals were scored by Treeby after he was felled by a south defender.Could have in fact been three goals as the defender was throwing mud during his second goal kick.
That my friends was it for south they didn't trouble the Eagles for the rest of the game they did score at least 1 goal.But to little to late by that stage.And Luke Jarrad kicked his goals in the final term including a great trick shot with his back to goal !!!

While the Eagles may not make the Finals they have unearthed some good young players.The likes of Corbet perform very well and at his age he is to old to get drafted I just hope he continues to improve.Hall Goldsworthy are what the team needs in small forwards .And how Dale Symmonds made it to the ground and play so well is beyond me .After seeing him leave the ground the two weeks earlier in the seconds its amazing he can still perform .

Well done guys keep up the good work And whoever was thinking in the Coaches BOX and big well done to you as well .
