After a tumultuous week, Geelong has thrown its total support behind Mark Thompson with president, Frank Costa saying he expects the coach to remain at the helm of the club.

Speaking at his president's dinner prior to Friday night's clash with Essendon at Telstra Dome, Costa said Thompson had the unanimous support of the board and was the right person to lead the club.

"Mark is doing a very good job for us and regardless of the fact we've lost a few games in recent times, we always have and still believe without any question that he is the person to lead our club to where we want to be," Costa said.

"This is the unanimous view of the board and senior management at Geelong."

Thompson's performance review should be seen separately to his contract, which expires at the end of 2007, the president said.

"Like everyone at the club, including directors, staff, players and coaches, Mark's performance review occurs at least annually," Costa said.

"This is a separate issue to his job security and contract which ends at the completion of next season."

"We fully expect and anticipate Mark continuing to be our coach. There should be no ambiguity about that statement."

Despite just three wins from the first 10 rounds, Geelong has not given up on this season.

"We will continue to work each and every week to win games to move up the ladder," Costa said.

"We've seen our team respond to adversity before and we fully expect them to do it again."

When a clubs board publicly comes out and says the coach has their full backing - he's gone two weeks later.

Yes, but only the Geelong Board have publicly supported their coach, so "Bummer's" days are obviously numbered!

Still don't reckon Costa will give Thompson the big A, although many Catters probably wouldn't be sad to see him go. He is contracted till the end of 07 I believe so hopefully the club won't waste money paying out Bomber's contract and then go and hire yet another untried coach. We will just have to wait and see gentlemen.
