Last year when Bryce Campbell cleaned up McCabe I thought "Gee whiz, the poor bastard didn't even see it coming."

Well, you know what McCabe? You deserve every bit of that clothes-hanger, and then some. That "bump" today was one of the most cowardly yellow things I've ever seen on a football field.

You are a disgrace.

Ball-up in the centre... Carr had eyes for the ball. McCabe ran past the ruckmen and straight into Carr. Didn't even once look at the ball.

Carr was stretchered off.

No offence fatal but after watching Port players gutlessly hitting blokes on the ground by sliding into them knees first throughout the 80s and 90s (it seemed like a team directive and still is strong in my memory) I find it hard to have any sympathy.

Hmmm... maybe, but at least those guys had possession of the footy and would reasonably be expecting some contact.

McCabe's hit was ridiculously thug-ish and totally uncalled for. Could have just grabbed him to keep him away from the contest.

Anyway, back to the WC now where hits like that are cured by the magic sponge.

We'll have to disagree on that one Fatal, I don't think blokes battling for the ball with eyes on the ball whilst on the ground don't deserve knees from a gutless prick from behind with knees into his kidneys, at least the incident of McCabe's you mention is only a one off an not a constant team tactic for a period of over a decade. Mind you I've never held it against Port, I held it against the umps that never paid anything for it.

PS How's the bubs going? All is going well I hope.

fatalberton, I saw that "bump" by McCabe today. I also thought of the irony that it took place in almost the exact same spot as where Bryce Campbell laid him out in 2005. Had Butcher been in the play and attacking the ball, McCabe's bump would have been a good one. His arm was tucked into his side and not raised at all. However, as you say, Butcher's eyes were on the ball which was in the air. McCabe charged him, it was a pre-meditated action and the SANFL have a duty of care to ensure this type of thing doesn't happen in future.

I am always annoyed when I hear people say the player who was hit should have had more awareness of players around him (Koschitzke, etc), but if the player is watching the ball and not in the play, he would not be expecting someone to blatantly charge him and knock him to the ground. Butcher looked a very sick young man, and McCabe should get a very long holiday for his malicious and unwarranted attack.

Was it Butcher or Carr?
I know a few Bays fans who will be giggling themselves silly if it was Butcher.

Reminds me of a story of when I used to follow soccer in the late 80s early 90s, the wogs used to always call a hacker a "butcher".
One day they were abusing this guy all day long screaming at him telling him he was a butcher but all he did was giggle all day at the comment with a sheepish grin.
It came to light that evening that the guy was actually a butcher by trade.

Whoops, that's a bit of track, I blame the Coopers! :wink:

Not really. Pickett's bumps, although dangerous, are on players over the ball. Troy Butcher was just standing 10 metres from the play watching the ball as the umpire bounced it. McCabe sprinted 20 metres straight at him and hit him as he was looking up in the air. It wasn't good.
