McCabes bump (ahem!)

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Postby dogs01 » Sun Jun 18, 2006 5:19 pm

I was not condoning what McCabe did at all and if he got games for that i would totally agree with it.and i also know the club wasnt to thrilled about the incident either. All i was saying is that everyone picked that cheap shot but, not the one on Gowans. If that was any other player it would have had a mention, and yes it was a cheap shot the player who hit him wasnt looking at the ball just James's back.

The brawl incident happened in front of the Maggots Cheer Squad and it was they who pushed and prodded players over the fence.

Centrals have not got an official cheer squad only end to end supporters and if my memory serves me right i am sure our end to enders were behind the southern goals and not in the north western end when this incident occurred !!!!!!!

So any one else close to the incident please elaborate !!!!!!!!

Yep, Central's end-to-enders would have needed a Tardis to get to the Northern pocket in time for the brawl.

Having toothless cronies proding you with a flag, while trying to fight isn't on... I'm sure the North Grog Squad would sort them out in no uncertain terms if they tried that sort of crap with our players...

Funny how no one has mentioned that the Centrals cheer squad ran about 80 metres to get involved

The incident was in the forward pocket, the "cheersquad" are directly behind the goals. It's a big ground, but...

Yes the ballwas within 10 metres. It was a ball-up and McCabe gave a font-on bump to give our on-ballers first use of the ball.

The hysteria from the Port fans is ridiculous. I've been watching our players get hit for years by Port thugs and they think thats good tough footy. One of theirs goes off on a strecher after they set the scene in the first 30 seconds of the game and they cry foul. At least Butcher was bumped from the front - the hit on Gowans was from behind after he had completed the mark.

Although the brawl was close to the fence, the Port Cheer squad acted poorly. Should have just let the players duke it out. I havent seen the hit on Gowans so I cant comment. Ive only seen the hit on butcher. Yes it was bad. And as you would expect in a team game, your team mates come in and its on. Team mates remenstarting and things getting nasty tends to happen in football. The only thing you could get McCabe with would be charging. But was the ball within 5 metres of that bump. If it was then you could agree you it was a shepared. But it sounds like that sort of thing happened earlier. So although I hope Troy is ok as you never want to see any footballer injured from a off the ball hit, im going to say play on.

Cheers, nothing wrong with it then and well within the rules.
It shits me that good hard bumbs like this are trying to be outlawed out of the game.

I think the Port supporters have been spending too much time watching the AFL, just because the AFL's turned into netball doesn't mean the SANFL has to.

Play on...

fatal, next time Butcher will keep both eyes open. McCabe had his arms tucked in and bumped him. Butcher came off second best.
Good hard bumps shouldn't taken out of the game...it wasn't head high, just bloody hard.

Nup Wedgie, it was ugly sniping. The only intent was to maim the player. The umpire was throwing up the ball, Butcher had his hands up towards the ruck competition, and the Centrals player lined him up front and centre from 3 or 4 metres run up, running away from the ruckmen. Nothing to do with the play, just picking off a bloke trying to get the red oval thing.

If it was legal, the centre bounces and boundary throw ups and around the oval bounces would end up with 2 players going for the ball, and everyone else looking to find someone not looking at them and barreling them.

Me thinks will get 2-3 weeks.

P.S. Not defending a Port Player, but Butcher did NOT leave the Bays for more money. He is getting paid LESS @ the Magpies, and also paid some of the transfer cost from the Bays out of his own pocket.

(And that will teach you Butcher you money hungry mercenary) to quote Wedgie.

I wonder how much that had to do with the motivation for the hit. From where I was there is no question the bump was executed fairly,ie. no elbow and it was within 5 metres but the fact that several of our blokes let Butcher know what they were thinking after the bump suggests to me that he is not one of the most welcome visitors to Dogland.I suspect McCabe saw and took an opportunity to deal some rough justice to a bloke who could be said to have "played with" Centrals pre-season if you know what I mean.I also suspect that if it were any other Port player he probably wouldn't have done it.I guess what I am saying is that it was a political assassination rather than a drive by shooting. My 2 bobs worth

And at the other end of the ground as we were kicking to the southern end at the time. The Port Cheer squad started on the grass behind the concousre but got down to the fence as fast as their moccies could carry them.

This really annoys me. That means from now on when the ball is bounced it is open season to just run through anyone, just so long as you have your elbow tucked in. So nobody will be watching the ball any more for fear of some idiot trying to pick them off. If that's fair, and if that's football, I don't want any more of it.

Everything you have said is correct, That is precisely what happened. Funny the SANFL wants to investigate the violence on the boundary line but not the incident that sparked the whole thing. And your comments about Butcher's circumstances upon leaving Glenelg are also 100% correct.

Dont know if they were end to enders or what they were, but there were quite a few doggies supporters behind the nothern goals, and about 25 or so of them ran over to the fence where the fight was. Thats a fact, but Im not saying anything happened or they did anything. I was standing just around from the Balfours and Coke vans in the south-eastern pocket. I spent most of the time trying to work out who the Port player that got injured was.

You cant compare someone being cleaned up when they take a mark to someone being cleaned up 10 metres off the ball.

Id like to actually find out what happened without all the anti-port bullshit being thrown around in this thread.
