It starts tomorrow. Who's going, and what do you like about it? I love watching some log chopping, checking out the horticultural displays and seeing some arena events, finishing with the fireworks.

Ironically normally my daughter loves going as she loves rides (takes after mum) and my son doesn't enjoy it.
This year my daughter has a fractured wrist so doesn't want to go but my son's decided he wants to go!
I quite often try and bribe them out of going saving myself hundreds of dollars.

Yep, it's definitely expensive. I have a pass that lets me get in and out over the whole week, so I usually go 2 or 3 times for just a couple of hours each time.

its good now that the kids have grown up, me and the missus go every couple of years and just wander around and check things out, like the animals and crafty stuff etc
save heaps of money not having the kids hanging around

Go every year don't like rides. Like looking at the exbits and walking around by myself. Little tip Pre buy your entrance tickets get from Australia post saves time lining up to get in and saves a little bit of money

We have tended to go and spend most of the time with the animals as we have been farmers, and dog breeders, and we even showed cats once or twice. We give the halls a once over, and stay well away from the sideshows. I made a good choice to take up Life Membership of the RA&HS back in 1975, and have been benefitting from the free entry ever since - well and truly got my money's worth!

We have popped over to visit family and attend the SHow, even since living in Melbourne, but we didn't get over this year as my wife has been ill.

We went the first few years we were over here because we had reciprocal rights and a free pass [and free parking] here, too.
Generally, apart from the dogs and cats, there was much less of the animal and farm orientation, and much more emphasis on the commercial stuff - sideshows, selling clothing and gadgets, and food.
In Melbourne it is much less "Agricultural and Horticultural" and more about extracting money.
We gave up bothering to go.

It makes it hard work getting to our office on Greenhill Rd when it is on. A waste of money i think it is but i can see it can be good for kids.

Crikey we have some grumpy old buggers on here, its only the ridiculous cost of it I dont like, besides that I love a day at the show and unlike other parents I dont give a rats about the animals, its all sideshows, rides and showbags for me!

Damn right Wedgie! Mrs smac and the 2 girls head off happily to the animals and craft crap while smac jr and I head for dagwood dogs and rides. We meet up at the showbag hall later on!

A great chance to have a blast with the kids, they all enjoy themselves and best of all they are knackered afterwards and go to bed early!

When I had a child in my care, I would allow her to have as much fun as she wanted there (rides, games etc), but cut down/out the showbags.
When she was younger, I would get a 1 or 2 choclate ones, & just keep "topping it up" at home. As she got older, I would allow her 1 showbag of her choice- generally something that had a backpack, & other stuff gilrs like in it, or whatever she was ito at the time.
Imo, the showbags are a rip-off, & I much rathered spending time (& a bit of money) entertaining her, & making sure her day was special.

It's the rural background in my father's family, and spending time in the bush as a kid, that led me into farming myself. The high spot for me has always been things like patting a 2 metre at the shoulder Chianina bull, having my Fairy Floss coated fingers licked thoroughly by a Brahman bull while I talk to the owner, and debating the low-fat merits of Charolais and Gelbvieh beef cattle with breeders. There was one afternoon I spent a few minutes trying to work out whether an Ostrich can peck you harder then an Emu - the answer is "Yes!"

Because I took riding lessons at one time I have also some interest in horses, and although I have mostly ridden thoroughbreds [including Comic Court when I was a child] if I bought a horse it would be a Holsteiner.
