Any ideas?

I keep getting this stupid pop up type thing coming up on my computer every 3 or 4 minutes. Its not like an internet ad type pop up, but a error type message. Each one is worded a bit differently but says virtually the same thing, along the lines of the system registry has critical errors, may lead to data loss or corruption, scan system immediately, go to http://www....

I have Optus Broadband and the error came with something on the installation CD that came with it. I have been able to remove the problem before, but it came back when I had to reinstall Optus. I have tried registry scans, spyware scans, ad scans, virus scans and those sort of things, but nothing gets rid of it.

Doubt if it anything to do with Optus.A popup that warns of potential disaster and links to a website screams "malware".What is the page it links to?

Different one each time, but always something to do with a registry cleaner or scanner. It might not have anything to do with Optus, but it definately came from their installation CD.

This link seems to confirm that Optus do in fact install "extras" onto your pc.
Try Hijack This as referred in the link.
Sorry can't be of more help.

I had that 2, Its Malware or adware. NoWindows proplem will direct u to a site to buy a product. What ya do is
Type in the message in google.
Should give u a site that tells u how to remove it.
From memory u have to mess with the registry a bit, so follow the instructions exactly.
Let me know how u go.

Just had to reformat my comp, and the error message popped up again.

To get rid of it you need to turn off Messenger Service.

To turn off the Messenger Service, go into Control Panel. In XP category view, click Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, then Services. In XP classic view or W2K, go into Administrative Tools, and then Services. Scroll down to Messenger, right-click it and click Stop. After it stops, right click it again and select Properties. Change Startup Type to disabled, and click OK.

No more pop up.

Sounds like malware/spyware.

Something you've installed can make that come up - making you think you need to download a program, clean something, etc.

Agree with Dissident, sounds like malware/spyware. Have you tried restoring your computer to when it was bug free? If the message is redirecting you to a website it is probably malware/spyware.
