SA GOVERNMENT STRENGTHENS PARTNERSHIP

The State Government has resoundingly endorsed the SANFL’s major re-development plans for the upgrade of AAMI Stadium, committing a $5.5 million contribution towards the installation of state of the art security system technology and a second Superscreen.

In announcing the support today, Premier Mike Rann said “this Grant by the State Government will assist with the SANFL’s $36 million upgrade of the AAMI Stadium over the next five years.

Specifically it will result in upgrades of AAMI Stadium’s security systems and the installation of a second Superscreen to enable all patrons of the stadium to view big screen action and replays.

We consider the safety and security of the 51,500 people at the stadium is of the highest priority and wanted to assist the League in meeting and managing what have unfortunately become global security risks.”

SANFL Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker said “we are absolutely delighted that the State Government has shown such confidence in our plans for the redevelopment of AAMI Stadium and that the great partnership we have enjoyed will be further strengthened”

“The SANFL works closely with the State Government in the areas of health promotion and junior development and as an industry we contribute nearly a half a billion dollars to the State’s economy.

AAMI Stadium is already the pre-eminent sporting venue in this State.

By continually improving the Stadium we will not only provide our football patrons with a venue the equivalent of anything in Australia, we will also greatly enhance the State’s chances of attracting major sporting events such as World Cup soccer, a possible future bid for Commonwealth Games hosting and more world class events and concerts along the lines of our recent successes with U2 and Robbie Williams.

The State Government’s contribution will allow us to proceed with developments that are essential projects within our plan and the State will benefit from the results.”

I think they are helping to fix the scoreboard thats about to collapse if there is a strong wind.
My opinion is they should leave Adelaide oval alone unless...maybe....they upgrade the member's stands.

I seem to recall the SACA asking for a loan to help with upgrades to the members stand so they could attract big events and the Government saying "no we dont do that!"

No but **** up sports like soccer we'll throw $35 Million at to build them a white elephant at Hindmarsh. If it is good enough to play this years World Cup at an Olympic stadium along with the 1994, 1990, 1978, 1974 & 1966 world Cup finals why oh why couldn't they have up-graded the Adelaide oval spectator capacity and put in temporary seating so it was rectangular for the 2000 Olympics. If you think I'm ******* pissed about Adelaide Oval being overlooked in an up-grade you are ******* right!!!!

Thats my point! How can they give money to an upgrade at Footy Park and not the oval? Just because Andy says the place looks tired! I look tired and no one gives me money. The editorial in the paper this morning challeneges the premier to look at money for Adelaide and Hindmarsh stadium also.

Another point I would like to raise is; why can't the governement look at grants for SANFL clubs to spend money on their grounds and facilities like the VIC governement did. $200K per club would go along way...especially for West and South Adelaide!

Some of you have a strange definition of White Elephant.

I think the White elephant is Hindmarsh Stadium, although the success of the Reds has helped. Adelaide Oval sees 5 plus sporting events sold out or a large crowd a year. They are trying to upgrade so they can attact more events. At least Adelaide oval is used all year round. Footy Park sits there for 5 months a year growing grass. Don't get me wrong I dont have a problem with FP getting another screen. My beef is with the hypocrisy of the state governement not helping Adelaide Oval!

How come this State Government, I use the term very loosely, can find millions of dollars for the SANFL, which is rolling in cash, but not be able to fund a bus to take kids to school in the country at a miniscule fraction of the cost?

I agree. More people go to watch SANFL each weekend than those few who can't see the superscreen at AAMI. How about a toilet block, scoreboard and hot water system at Thebby and general upgrades at suburban ovals. If the money had to spent at AAMI, I'd rather see another tier on the eastern wing.

Umm, that was my point, ie the Government has put money into Footy Pk and Hindmarsh because of points a and b. (Point A - Football Park, Point B - Hindmarsh)

And as for how its gone backwards?
Where do I start?
Here's some:
1) only 1 bar in the outer now
2) only serves midstrength.
3) takes longer to get something to eat then it did in the past
4) food is worse
5) toilets are 40 years older
6) most things are 40 years older ie depreciation/going backwards
7) holds less people than it used to
8) can't kick footy on the ground
9) can't kick footy anyway despite acres of grass
10) car parking has got worse not better
11) less grass to enjoy
12) bar servers are 40 years older and 40 years slower!
13) see above point for some of the food sellers
14) see above point for some of the administrators

That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure I could come up with plenty more if I put my mind to it.

Well some people here will be happy - the state government just gave the SACA 16 million.

That's for a ground which sells out once - some stupid pyjama cricket game each year.

the food is no worse than footy park IMHO

agree the toilets need some $$$$$ spent on them

the issue of public liability has possibly prevented the kicking of the footy on the oval




just found out on ch 10 news the SA govt have given 16 million bucks to increase the capcity by 12,000
ok then i will stop my whinge about the inaction by the government.

See we raised the issue here on SA Footy and the governement acted. 16 Million, far out I knew this website was powerful I just didn't realise how much influence it really had.
