perhaps the saafl should also instigate some active recruitment campaigns re umpires rather than solely relying on the clubs to ante up?

i just know that many umpires would want to be involved in a roster system as many see that it has no direct input onto their club of choice - even though it actually does.

As you would be well aware Rulebooks input is especially good for your D's as the onfield 19th man and would be worth at least 2 to 5 goals per game.

I am still shocked that the SAAFL doesn't supply goal or boundary umpires for a-grade, let alone b, c, or d grade umpires; I don't know of another league in SA with this problem. Surely the much talked about excessive affiliation fees of SAAFL clubs would allow for a doubling of the pay rates for the men in white (or some technocolour number); Certainly that would help.

Also, why are the affiliation fees so onerous in the SAAFL anyway? I don't actually see the benefits flowing back to the clubs?
Where's Bill? Yeah... Hmm... Bill is on the Villa Quatro, on the road to Salina. I will draw you a map.

Div 3 up its guaranteed that goal and boundary Umps are supplied, in Div 4 this year they were supplied every now and then when the availability allowed. Which was a pain in the ar5e IMO as the clubs had to find their own one week then not the next. No idea how the other divs went in regards to this.

7 A grade divisions plus D1/2 reserves get umpires supplied??? that works out at around 54 people required to umpire the games, plus if D1 A grade have 3 central umpires you need roughly 60.

A D1 central umpire gets around $130 a minor round game more for finals D7 A grade gets only $78. D1 res get paid more than D7 umpires at $85

Do you think as a part of affiliation all clubs must supply an umpire to train twice a week at umpire training and be placed at different grounds within their division just for the reserves??

even once a week would be enough for me. Can't expect them to be SANFL standard umps but if they are shown the basics then the overall standard should improve

That is ridiculous, give the clubs some credit, it is their responsibility to be able to supply a suitable umpire. We had to change our umpire during the year because we felt the first one wasn't doing a satisfactory job, all we were after was someone to look after the player going for the ball to keep the games incident free.

I understand your point of view LM and it was only a suggestion. I however do not see it as a ridiculous post and then maybe all umpires would be on the same wave length. It is merely to ensure they understand fully all the rules and develop a sufficient amount of fitness (Even a little) so they can get to the correct possitions to look after all players on the park. It is just an idea.....

Sorry, ridiculous was a bit harsh, I think clubs should do B grade umpire reports, repeat offenders should attend umpire school, if they still get continual poor reports, then :axe:

What are you talking about Zed? Glenunga is everyone's favourite trip. Their changerooms are very accomodating. So is Burnside Council.

i'm aware that the book is overly zealous at times - but then the d grade has had independent umpires in the finals and they've bowed out - kinda supports my argument that oft biased umpires don't help the team in the long run.

they are one of the worst changerooms going around, it floods too easily in the visitors changerooms, ground conditions are very average.

Let's call a spade a spade, he is a blatant cheat! and you are correct re independent umps in finals as just proven with them losing, but what about close games that his dubious decisions directly effect the outcomes and cost legitimate teams a top 5 finish and chance to play in finals....again need a fair system of umpire allocation to remove this situation.
