The timing of the merger with commencement of the "all in one Division" system was pure coincidence.
I dont think you could be much further off with your statement. Lonsdale won the premiership the year before, not really sure what urgent needs they would of had!!! Osullivan beach had a very young list and were developing into a good team, at that stage there were no problems with the soccer club and the oval.
If there stayed 2 divisions they definately would not of merged, in saying that i dont think that is a bad thing that the clubs did merge and the competition became one division.
Would like to hear Lion hearts thoughts on this.
Maybe the word "urgent" was too strong. However, even with Lonsdale winning the last Div Two Premiership they obviously still had some sort of need or they wouldn't have agreed to a merge. And as for Sullies, maybe not in the first year, but certainly after that they could not use Galloway Road. The writing was on the wall.
Both had a need, hence the merger.
Can't buy the fact that they merged "because they were going into Div One". Why would the Premiers see a need to merge ? The bottom side was game enough to go it alone. Its name was Cove.
Being heavily involved down at Sullies at the time i can tell you that the merge was DEFINATELY brought about by the introduction of 1 division. Sullies and Lonsdale would have remained as they were if not for the league announcing the merge of div 1 and 2.
Sullies had entered div 1 twice before but failed because it simply didnt have the money it took to recruit key footballers to help guide our young talent. Our young guns were being lured elsewhere by big money and we simply could not combat the situation. We had no income other than canteen and gate takings and did not recieve 1 cent from bar takings. Therefore the decision was made to merge rather than die a painful death.
Talks began mid season and the decision to merge was made even before Lonsdale were to become the premiers of that season. Lonsdale had some very good established senior footballers (some with div 1 experience) and some money behind it.The first 2 seasons from memory home games were split between Sullies and Lonsdale but the soccer club were making it increasingly difficult to train and play at Sullies. The final straw was the goal posts being removed by the soccer club in off season and mysteriously going missing.
Many stalwarts didnt back the merger from both sides and the club lost key people because of this. Not only that but many gutless people who voted for the merger left without ever playing or supporting a single game as Lonsdale Lions.
One thing i can say for sure and certain and that is if the merger didnt happen i think both clubs would not still be around. We are still a young club and the last 6-7 seasons have been a learning curve but we know we have a future if we do the hard yards.
