Fears of TB outbreak at uni
A GROUP of 160 students and staff at a Brisbane university are to be screened for tuberculosis after a student tested positive last week.
Queensland Health TB control centre director Dr Anastasios Konstantinos said the Queensland University of Technology Gardens Point campus student who tested positive was an Australian citizen.
The student was now recovering after therapy.
Dr Konstantinos said the screening of 160 staff and students would be extended if evidence of recent TB infection was found in the group.
"It is important to note that TB has a low infection rate and is extremely difficult to contract,'' Dr Konstantinos said.
"There is minimal risk of transmission to staff and other students, but those identified as possible contacts are being offered screening as a precaution.''
Queensland has about 100 new notifications of TB each year, with 84 reported so far this year.
I'll try and stop infecting everyone on here.
